Virginia legalized sports betting in April 2020 and took its first online bet on January 21, 2021, before it had a single casino. The Virginia Lottery issues the permits, and ten online sportsbooks hold one today. Casino sportsbooks came later, starting in Bristol in 2022.

Below is our list of the best Virginia apps, followed by a closer look at each one we recommend. Further down we cover the college rules, how Virginia taxes winnings and the questions people ask us most.

Offers checked November 4, 2026. Terms apply to every offer, so read them on the operator's site before you sign up.

Sports betting law in Virginia

The General Assembly passed HB 896 and SB 384 in 2020 and accepted Governor Ralph Northam's amendments on April 22, 2020. The law took effect that July and gave the Virginia Lottery the job of issuing permits. Operators pay a 15% tax on revenue, and online betting opened on January 21, 2021, well before the first casino.

The college rules catch people out. You cannot bet on any game that involves a Virginia college team, even in a tournament, and prop bets on college games are off the board for every school. The Lottery also bans bets on drafts and on awards such as MVP.

The market has thinned out over time. Unibet, Betfred, SuperBook, Betr and Sporttrade have all left, leaving ten online sportsbooks. A 2026 law banned credit card deposits from July 1, 2026, and online casino bills failed again in 2026, so casino games are still only legal in person.

Virginia teams to bet on

No major-league team plays in Virginia, so most fans here follow the Washington teams and the in-state colleges. Games involving Virginia colleges cannot be bet in the state.

  • Washington Commanders (NFL): Headquartered in Ashburn and partnered with FanDuel on its Virginia permit. The team plays in Landover, Maryland and plans to move to a new stadium in Washington in 2030.
  • Washington's other teams: The Capitals (NHL), Wizards (NBA), Nationals (MLB), Mystics (WNBA), D.C. United (MLS) and Washington Spirit (NWSL) are all close by.
  • Virginia Cavaliers (college): Football won a school-record 11 games in 2025 and Tony Elliott was named ACC Coach of the Year. Men's basketball went 30-6 in Ryan Odom's first season.
  • Virginia Tech Hokies (college): Hired James Franklin as head football coach in November 2025.
  • James Madison Dukes (college): Won the Sun Belt in 2025 and reached the College Football Playoff.
  • VCU Rams (college): Won the Atlantic 10 tournament in 2026, their second title in a row.
  • NASCAR: Martinsville Speedway and Richmond Raceway both host Cup Series races.
