Milwaukee leads the World Series 1-0 after a 3-2 win in Game 1. A game-ending double play in the ninth was overturned on a Rays challenge, a run scored, and Jonny DeLuca then struck out with the tying run on third. Tampa Bay's hitters struck out nine times and scored twice.

Expect the pitching to keep Game 2 low-scoring too. Drew Rasmussen, a former Brewers draft pick, went 16-5 with a 2.67 ERA and 174 strikeouts in 172 innings, and the Rays won 14 of his 15 starts after the All-Star break. Milwaukee counters with rookie Logan Henderson, who went 11-3 with a 2.47 ERA and 110 strikeouts in 98 1/3 innings. First pitch is 8:00 PM ET Saturday at American Family Field.

Both picks need the same game: Rasmussen works deep and misses bats, while Henderson and Milwaukee's bullpen keep Tampa Bay's lineup quiet the way they did in Game 1.

Rays vs. Brewers Predictions

  • Pick #1: Drew Rasmussen Over 5.5 Strikeouts (-143)
  • Pick #2: Rays Team Total Under 3.5 Runs (-154)

PICK #1: Drew Rasmussen Over 5.5 Strikeouts (-143)

The -143 price asks for six or more strikeouts about 58.8% of the time, and Rasmussen's October workload puts him above that.

The Rays gave him extra rest instead of starting him in Game 1, and he has gone longer than any of their starters this month: eight innings on 101 pitches, six on 91, then seven on 95. He faced 26, 25 and 25 batters and struck out 23 of those 76, about 30%. His regular-season rate was 26%, which works out to six and a half strikeouts over 25 batters.

Milwaukee's hitters have been striking out more lately. They struck out 22.3% of the time against right-handers in the regular season, right at the league average, but have struck out 50 times in 184 plate appearances over their last five playoff games. Rasmussen also struck out eight of the 20 Brewers he faced on April 1.

A short outing is what beats this. Over the full season he reached six strikeouts in 18 of his 33 starts, so an early exit on a high pitch count would leave him short. The pick also depends on him starting as announced.

PICK #2: Rays Team Total Under 3.5 Runs (-154)

Tampa Bay has to be held to three runs or fewer, and -154 implies a 60.6% chance of that. Against Henderson, opponents have scored more than three runs only five times in his 20 starts, postseason included.

He was even tougher at home, with a 1.84 ERA in eight regular-season starts at American Family Field (nine earned runs in 44 innings). The Rays ranked 12th in the majors in runs this season and have scored three or fewer in six of their 10 playoff games, Game 1 included.

Henderson went five innings and then four in his two playoff starts, so Milwaukee's relievers will probably need about a dozen outs. They have allowed few runs all month, gave up one in four innings on Friday, and have Sunday off before Game 3.

More innings against the bullpen is also where this could go wrong. Henderson allowed four runs (two earned) in his last start on Oct. 12, and Tampa Bay has scored four or more in four playoff games. Like the first pick, this one assumes the announced starter takes the mound.
