Odds as of 7:29 AM ET, Nov 6, 2026

Virginia Tech (6-2, 3-2 ACC) visits SMU (6-2, 4-2) at 7:00 PM ET at Gerald J. Ford Stadium in Dallas. SMU is a 6.5-point favorite and the total is 56.5. The Hokies are coming off an open week after a 20-16 win at Clemson. SMU lost 30-27 at Syracuse in its last game even though Kevin Jennings completed 29 of 36 passes for 352 yards.

We expect SMU's passing game to put Virginia Tech behind and force the Hokies to throw to stay in it. Jennings has 2,414 passing yards and 21 touchdowns through eight games. When Virginia Tech has had to chase this season, its yards have gone to slot receiver Que'Sean Brown and running back Jeffrey Overton Jr., so both picks ride on that script. Ethan Grunkemeyer and Jennings are expected to start at quarterback.

Virginia Tech's latest availability report has wide receivers Shamarius "Snook" Peterkin and Luke Stuewe out, along with four offensive linemen. Guards Montavious Cunningham and Brody Meadows are expected back after the open week.

Virginia Tech vs. SMU Predictions

  • Pick #1: Que'Sean Brown 60+ Receiving Yards (-146)
  • Pick #2: Jeffrey Overton 15+ Receiving Yards (-131)

PICK #1: Que'Sean Brown 60+ Receiving Yards (-146)

Brown leads Virginia Tech with 51 catches for 685 yards and has caught at least five passes in all eight games. He has gone over 60 in four straight: 147 against Pitt, 63 at Cal, 182 against Georgia Tech and 69 at Clemson.

Look at the two losses in that run. Virginia Tech fell 35-33 to Pitt and 25-20 at Cal, and Brown cleared 60 both times. When the other team keeps scoring and the Hokies have to answer through the air, more of the offense goes through him. Tight end Luke Reynolds (50 catches, 493 yards) is the only other Hokie near his volume.

The price implies 59.3%, and his full record against FBS teams is less kind. Earlier in the season he had 41 yards against Old Dominion, 23 at Maryland and 51 at Boston College, which puts him at 4 of 7 against FBS opponents. Virginia Tech won all three of those games, two of them by more than a touchdown, and a road game as an underdog in Dallas shouldn't play out that way. SMU allows about 182 passing yards a game, and senior slot corner Jarvis Lee will see a lot of him.

PICK #2: Jeffrey Overton 15+ Receiving Yards (-131)

Overton is the Hokies' lead back and a weekly part of the passing game. He has 23 catches for 214 yards this season and has reached 15 receiving yards in six of seven games against FBS teams: 32 against Old Dominion, 63 at Maryland, 19 at Boston College, 36 against Pitt, 40 at Cal and 29 against Georgia Tech. He caught five passes against Pitt and four at Cal, the same two losses where Brown piled up yards.

SMU's pass rush helps too. The Mustangs average nearly three sacks a game, and Clemson sacked Grunkemeyer six times in Virginia Tech's last game. Quick throws to the back are how an offense deals with that, and having the two guards back should buy Grunkemeyer a little more time to find him.

At -131 the implied chance is 56.7%. His one miss came most recently: one catch for -5 yards at Clemson, on a night he ran 10 times for 26 yards. One catch can sink a number this low, but if Virginia Tech is chasing in the second half, he should see more than one.
