No. 22 UCLA opens Pauley Pavilion against North Florida at 10:30 PM ET, four nights after beating No. 5 Arizona 84-75 in Las Vegas. This should be a fast game with a lot of possessions, one UCLA wins easily but not by 32. North Florida plays quickly enough to keep getting shots up and stay inside the number, and UCLA's offense should carry the total past where it sits. That's why we're on the Over and North Florida +31.5. Something like a 93-63 UCLA win cashes both.

North Florida vs. UCLA Predictions

  • Pick #1: Over 153.5 (-115)
  • Pick #2: North Florida +31.5 (-105)

PICK #1: Over 153.5 (-115)

North Florida wants to run. A wire preview of this game, citing tempo data, had the Ospreys averaging possessions of under 15 seconds in their 71-63 opening win at California Baptist, where they shot almost 64% inside the arc. The school's box score tells the same story: North Florida won the paint 42-20 and fast-break points 13-10. Every extra trip is another chance for a UCLA offense that put 84 on Arizona, with four Bruins in double figures. Trent Perry scored 21 and went 11-for-11 at the line, and Jaylen Petty hit four threes.

Most of the market already sits higher than this. Four of the seven books on one major odds board hang 154.5 or more, and one book's team totals (UCLA 93.5, North Florida 61.5) add up to 155. At 153.5, -115 implies a 53.5% chance, and we're a point or two under where most of those books are.

North Florida's own offense is the weak point. The Ospreys shot 25% from three and turned it over 18 times in the opener, and those were one-game numbers. If UCLA forces that kind of night and the benches walk it up for the last eight minutes, this stays under.

PICK #2: North Florida +31.5 (-105)

Thirty-one and a half is a lot to lay against a team that plays this fast and just won on the road. North Florida was a road underdog at California Baptist and won outright, holding the Lancers to 35% shooting and 4-of-27 from three and winning the boards 41-31. Five Ospreys scored in double figures. Kent Jackson, who averaged 14.8 points last season, opened with 15, and Mason Watkins had 13 points and seven rebounds in his college debut.

UCLA is good, and it's also still learning a new roster. The Bruins return six players and lost Tyler Bilodeau, their leading scorer the past two seasons, to the draft. Filip Jovic, an Auburn transfer who figures to come off the bench, missed the opener with a sprained left ankle and has been called day to day. Even against Arizona, a 16-point second-half lead shrank to 71-70 before UCLA closed on a 13-5 run.

At -105 you're paying for a 51.2% chance. This loses if UCLA keeps its starters in and wins by 35 or more, and talent gaps this wide do produce those nights. For UCLA to cover 31.5 it needs a rout from start to finish, though, and North Florida's pace should keep it scoring late.
