San Antonio opens NBA Cup group play at Golden 1 Center in Sacramento at 10:00 PM ET, in a game that also counts toward the regular season. The Spurs are 6-2 and have won six straight, most recently a 112-111 win over Dallas in which Victor Wembanyama scored 52 points with 24 rebounds. The Kings are 1-7 and lost 116-103 at home to the Lakers in their last game. These two have played four regular-season games since the start of last season, and San Antonio won all four, by 13, 17, 28 and 27 points. None of those games finished with fewer than 233 total points. That pattern should hold: the Spurs score at will against a defense ranked 29th and pull away, which puts us on San Antonio to cover and on the Over.

Sacramento is again without Keegan Murray (left ankle), Maxime Raynaud (right knee) and Ben Simmons, all listed out on the latest official injury report. San Antonio has Tobias Harris (left calf) and Jayden Quaintance (right knee) out. None of Murray, Raynaud or Harris has played in his team's last five games.

Spurs vs. Kings Predictions

  • Pick #1: Spurs -15.5 (-106)
  • Pick #2: Over 228.5 (-115)

PICK #1: Spurs -15.5 (-106)

Sacramento allows 123.3 points a game, 29th in the league, and gave up 132 at New Orleans and 136 at Memphis in consecutive road losses. San Antonio allows 108.6, seventh-fewest, and scores 116.9. The Kings can't match that on either end, and the meetings show it. The Spurs won the first one this season 130-103 in San Antonio and swept last season's three games 123-110, 139-122 and 132-104. Three of those four wins came by 17 or more.

The price implies 51.5%. This is a big number for a team that hasn't been covering them: San Antonio is 3-5 against the spread and covered only two of its last five, missing in the one-point win over Dallas as a 12.5-point favorite. One projection model has the Spurs by about 10, and some previews like the Kings with the points. San Antonio also plays at Portland the next night, so a game that's decided early could see the starters sit and give Sacramento a late run. We think the gap shows well before that. The Kings score 109.3 a game, 24th in the league, and the closest of the last four meetings was a 13-point game.

PICK #2: Over 228.5 (-115)

Sacramento's defense is the reason for this one too. Kings games have gone over 228.5 in five of eight this season, three of them reaching 241 or more (248, 252 and 241). The four recent meetings with San Antonio finished at 233, 261, 236 and 233. Most of the money agrees, with 72% of the handle on the Over from 46% of the tickets.

At -115 the Over implies 53.5%, and San Antonio's defense is the problem. Only two of the Spurs' eight games have topped 228.5, and three of their last five stayed under the closing total. If the Kings stall, the Spurs need to get to something like 125 on their own, and with a game the next night they may ease off once the lead is safe. They scored 130 in the first meeting, though, and the Kings allow 123.3 a game.
