Portland visits the Lakers at 10:00 PM ET in an NBA Cup West Group C game that also counts in the regular-season standings. The Blazers are 6-1 and haven't lost on the road in five tries. The Lakers are 7-2 and 4-1 at home, and they're 0-1 in the group after a 112-95 loss at Golden State. Portland's offense hasn't slowed down without Ja Morant, and Damian Lillard has picked up more of the load. We think that keeps this game within a possession, so we're backing the Blazers with the points and Lillard to clear his combined line.

Portland has ruled out Morant (left hamstring strain, expected to miss at least four weeks), Shaedon Sharpe and Vit Krejci. The Lakers list Sandro Mamukelashvili as questionable with an illness. Luka Doncic isn't on the injury report. Portland plays at home against San Antonio the next night.

Trail Blazers vs. Lakers Predictions

  • Pick #1: Trail Blazers +2.5 (-106)
  • Pick #2: Damian Lillard Over 29.5 Points + Rebounds + Assists (-118)

PICK #1: Trail Blazers +2.5 (-106)

Portland is 3-0 without Morant, and all three wins came on the road: 112-90 at Utah, 118-110 at Denver and 132-119 at Phoenix. Scoot Henderson took Morant's starting spot, and coach Micah Nori kept Jrue Holiday in charge of the second unit. Holiday had 17 points and 10 assists at Denver. At Phoenix, Deni Avdija had 21 points and 12 assists and Donovan Clingan scored 24.

The Blazers score 121.9 points a game, the most in the league, and allow 110.7. The Lakers score 121.8 and give up 113.9. Portland also won the first meeting 136-129 in Los Angeles, though Morant played 31 minutes that night.

The problem is Doncic. He has scored 40, 42, 45 and 37 in his last four games, and the Lakers have won three straight, the last two by 21 and 13. Portland's bench is thinner with Krejci out, and with a home game the next night Nori may limit his starters' minutes. At -106 the Blazers need to cover 51.5% of the time.

PICK #2: Damian Lillard Over 29.5 Points + Rebounds + Assists (-118)

Since Morant went down, Lillard has put up 31, 32 and 33 combined: 22 points, five rebounds and four assists at Utah, 20-6-6 at Denver and 25-3-5 at Phoenix. He had 30 (21 points, five rebounds, four assists) in the first meeting with the Lakers. He has cleared 29.5 in five of his seven games this season. The two misses were 26 at Sacramento and 13 in the home loss to Memphis, when he shot 3 for 13.

His three-point shot hasn't been carrying him. He made three, one and two threes in the three games without Morant and made up the difference at the line, going 7 for 8, 9 for 10 and 5 for 5. He has started every game and played between 27 and 33 minutes.

-118 implies a 54.1% chance. Minutes are the catch. He played only 27 in the 22-point win at Utah, so a lopsided game in either direction cuts into his total. Henderson and Holiday also bring the ball up, which can cap his assists. If the game stays close, as we expect, he's on the floor at the end.
