Odds as of Oct 3, 6:12 AM ET

Georgia hasn't played a single game closer than 28 points. The Bulldogs are 4-0 (2-0 SEC) and No. 2 in both major polls, and Vanderbilt (3-1, 0-1) is the homecoming opponent in Athens. The Commodores come in off a 21-15 loss at Auburn, and they don't yet know who will play quarterback. Jared Curtis, the five-star freshman who flipped from Georgia to Vanderbilt last December, has been questionable on all three availability reports this week. On Thursday, Clark Lea said Curtis hadn't been "full go" in practice but had "felt a little better" each day and is "our starting quarterback." Curtis went through Friday's walk-through and will be evaluated before kickoff. Georgia has two game-time decisions of its own: running back Nate Frazier (ribs) and receiver Isiah Canion. The final availability report should post around 11:15 AM ET.

Georgia opened -23.5. The consensus is now Georgia -25 (-110), with Vanderbilt +25 at -112. The total opened at 57.5 and has dropped to 50.5 (Over -115, Under -105). Curtis explains only part of that move. At least one book was already at 52.5 early in the week, a few days after Vanderbilt scored one touchdown at Auburn and before Curtis showed up on Wednesday's report.

Kickoff is 12:45 PM ET at Sanford Stadium, on SEC Network. It should be mostly cloudy, warm and humid, around 80 degrees with light wind. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible: the chance is 38% at noon and 45% at 1 PM, then rises to about 55% in the 2 PM and 3 PM hours.

Vanderbilt vs. Georgia Predictions

  • Pick #1: Talyn Taylor Anytime Touchdown (+135)
  • Pick #2: Georgia -25 (-110)
  • Pick #3: Sedrick Alexander Anytime Touchdown (+170)

PICK #1: Talyn Taylor Anytime Touchdown (+135)

Georgia has thrown 13 touchdown passes to 11 different players. Taylor is the only one with more than one. He has three: an 11-yarder against Tennessee State, a 5-yarder against Western Kentucky and a 35-yarder against Oklahoma, where he finished with four catches for 110 yards. His nine catches for 169 yards leave him two yards behind Craig Dandridge for the team lead.

The timing is what I like. One of his touchdowns came in the first quarter and two came in the second, when the starters do their scoring, and Georgia is favored by 25. Vanderbilt has allowed a touchdown pass in every game, six in total, and five of them covered 23 yards or more. That includes two of the three Keenan Jackson caught for NC State. The +135 price (as of 6:12 AM ET) implies 42.6%.

Arkansas is the reason for doubt. Georgia ran the ball 42 times in that game, and Taylor didn't catch a pass. Georgia also spreads its touchdowns around: 14 of its 30 have been runs, and Chauncey Bowens and Frazier have five rushing scores each. Gunner Stockton hasn't thrown more than 25 passes in any game, and a big lead usually ends the passing day early. Vanderbilt has 13 sacks that can kill a drive, and storms near kickoff would make life harder for any receiver. If Canion is cleared, that adds another receiver to the rotation.

Dandridge (+135) is the other option. The freshman leads the team with 171 receiving yards but has only one touchdown. Taylor needs the same thing Georgia -25 needs, early points from the Bulldogs, so a sluggish start by the Georgia offense would sink both picks.

PICK #2: Georgia -25 (-110)

Georgia scores 54.8 points a game, the most in FBS. Vanderbilt scored one touchdown last week and doesn't know who its quarterback is. That's the matchup. The consensus was -25 at -110 (as of 6:12 AM ET), which implies 52.4%.

Look at who Georgia scored those points against. It put 63 on Tennessee State, an FCS team, and 70 on Western Kentucky, which ranks 137th in scoring defense. It scored 45 at Arkansas (103rd) and 41 against Oklahoma (tied for 29th), and seven of the Oklahoma points came on an 85-yard fumble return. Georgia has outscored opponents 63-0 in first quarters and 133-12 by halftime. Vanderbilt gives up 21.8 points a game, tied for 60th.

Vanderbilt's offense averages 28.3 points, tied for 82nd, and 21 of its 113 points have come on returns. At Auburn it managed one touchdown and three field goals. If Curtis can't go, Blaze Berlowitz starts, and he is 14 of 25 for 178 yards this season.

The margin is the worry. Georgia won both SEC games by 28, only three points more than this spread, and opponents have scored 35 of their 53 points in the fourth quarter. Georgia plays at Alabama next week, so it has no reason to keep the starters in late. The move from -23.5 is already in the price. Vanderbilt has 13 sacks, and it held Auburn's offense to two touchdowns. Frazier, who has five touchdowns, could miss another game. A healthy Curtis makes covering harder too: he threw for 277 yards and three touchdowns against NC State.

That makes the quarterback news important. If Curtis is ruled out, the line will probably go up. Once it gets past -27.5, where neither 28-point win would have covered, I'd pass. If he plays and the line drops back to -24.5, take the smaller number. Some books are already at -25.5 (-108), which is still below both of those wins.

If you trust Georgia's offense more than you trust it to win by 26, the Over 50.5 (-115) is the alternative. All four Georgia games reached at least 54 points, though rain would hurt the Over. Georgia's last two scores, 41-13 and 45-17, would cover this spread and still leave room for the Vanderbilt touchdown in Pick #3.

PICK #3: Sedrick Alexander Anytime Touchdown (+170)

Alexander has scored in all four games: an 18-yard run against Austin Peay, a 9-yard run against Delaware, a 10-yard catch against NC State and a 3-yard run at Auburn. The Auburn score was the offense's only touchdown that day. That's four of Vanderbilt's 11 offensive touchdowns, and it extends his streak to five straight regular-season games, the first of them last season. He leads Vanderbilt's backs with 37 carries; Makhilyn Young has 30. The Commodores score once they get close, with 10 touchdowns in 15 red-zone trips. As of 6:12 AM ET the price was +170, which works out to 37.0%.

Teams have scored on Georgia. Opponents have seven touchdowns, including two each by Arkansas and Oklahoma, and Arkansas' Sutton Smith ran one in from 5 yards out.

This bet assumes Curtis plays. He appeared in all four of those games, starting the last two after coming off the bench in the first two, so we haven't seen Alexander score without him. If Curtis is ruled out, pass.

The matchup is a problem too. Georgia allows 50.5 rushing yards a game and 1.6 yards per carry, and it has given up 12 first-half points all season. Five of the seven touchdowns against Georgia came in the fourth quarter with the margin at 35 points or more. That means Alexander's score may have to come late, when Vanderbilt might rest its lead back in a game that's already decided. At Auburn he ran 11 times for 13 yards. Put the spread and total together and the market expects about 13 Vanderbilt points, which is one or two touchdowns. Curtis is also a goal-line threat: both of his rushing touchdowns were 1-yard runs against Delaware.

Young (+310) is the bet if you think the carries will shift. He outgained Alexander 46 yards to 13 at Auburn, but he has one touchdown in four games. This pick can win in the kind of game Georgia has been playing, like a 41-13 or 45-17, so it doesn't require the spread pick to lose.
