The Kings (4-7-2) host the Sharks (7-8-1) at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, with puck drop at 10:00 PM ET on TNT and truTV. Los Angeles is a -152 favorite. We think the Kings' top line, whole again with Adrian Kempe back, runs the shot count against a San Jose team that gives up a lot of shots and doesn't score many goals, and that Los Angeles wins by two or more while the Sharks chase late.

Kempe missed the loss to Buffalo but has practiced the last two days, and he skated with Artemi Panarin and Alex Laferriere on the top line at the latest practice. Brandt Clarke left one practice early and was back with the group the next day. The Kings are still waiting on Kevin Fiala, Alex Turcotte and Mats Zuccarello. Neither goalie is confirmed; Darcy Kuemper is projected for Los Angeles and Yaroslav Askarov for San Jose. How player props are graded in overtime depends on the book.

Sharks vs. Kings Predictions

  • Pick #1: Kings -1.5 (+150)
  • Pick #2: Artemi Panarin Over 2.5 Shots on Goal (-150)

PICK #1: Kings -1.5 (+150)

San Jose doesn't lose close. The Sharks have eight regulation losses this season, and seven of them were by two goals or more, including a 5-1 home loss to Ottawa two games ago. Their wins mostly take extra time: five of their seven came in overtime or a shootout, and only Ottawa and Vancouver have lost to them in regulation. So if the Kings win in 60 minutes, San Jose's own record says the margin is likely to be two, often with an empty net helping at the end.

The rest of the matchup fits. San Jose has the fifth-fewest goals per game in the league and allows 30.4 shots a game, third-most. Los Angeles gets Kempe back next to Panarin, the team's leading scorer with 13 points. At +150 the puck line implies a 40.0% chance, and we like the Kings' odds of a two-goal win better than that.

There's plenty that can go wrong. The Kings are 1-4-0 at home, and their one home win came in overtime. San Jose has won the last three meetings, including 5-4 in overtime in the first one this season. Los Angeles has the league's worst penalty kill at 61.5%, and the Sharks' top power-play unit runs through Macklin Celebrini and Ivar Stenberg, who has seven of his nine points with the extra man. Most of the money is on San Jose: 83% of the moneyline money on 64% of the bets, and 85% of both the bets and the money on the puck line. A one-goal Kings win loses this bet, and the case assumes Kuemper starts.

PICK #2: Artemi Panarin Over 2.5 Shots on Goal (-150)

Panarin is the Kings' volume shooter. He has 42 shots in 13 games, 3.2 a game, and has reached three in 10 of the 13, including 8 of his last 10: 3, 7, 0, 3, 3, 4, 3, 3, 1 and 5, newest first. At -150 the Over implies 60.0%.

Last season tells a weaker story. Split between the Rangers and the Kings, he reached three shots in 37 of 78 games, and 12 of 26 after his move to Los Angeles. His role is different now. Under new coach Peter Laviolette he's averaging 22:01 a night, up from 20:42 with the Kings last season, on the top line and the first power-play unit, and he already has three power-play goals. A Sharks team that gives up shots is a good match for that, and he had four shots, a goal and an assist in the first meeting.

The misses are the worry. He was held without a shot at Chicago and had one against Edmonton, and five of his ten clears were exactly three shots, so one quiet period can sink it. Last season's numbers are why -150 isn't a bargain.
