Golden State is one win from a championship in its second season. The Valkyries lead the Finals 3-2 after a 67-62 win in Atlanta and a 64-55 win at home, and Game 6 tips at 12:30 PM ET today at State Farm Arena. A Dream win forces a Game 7 in San Francisco.
We expect another low-scoring grind. Golden State has won this series with defense, holding Atlanta to 64, 62 and 55 in its three wins and making life hard for Angel Reese inside. Atlanta's defense has kept Gabby Williams in check at the other end. In that kind of game, Naz Hillmon stays quiet, Reese ends up a passer and Williams stays under her number. All three of those bets would have cashed together in Games 2, 4 and 5.
The totals in this series have been 132, 144, 168, 129 and 119, and only Atlanta's 97-71 rout in Game 3 went past today's 147.5. Atlanta is a 4.5-point favorite. Golden State moved Kaila Charles and Tiffany Hayes into the starting five after Game 3, sent Cecilia Zandalasini and Kayla Thornton to the bench, and has leaned on a seven-player rotation since. On the latest official injury report, Atlanta lists Brionna Jones out with a left leg injury (she hasn't played in the series) and Te-Hina Paopao questionable with a left leg injury. Golden State's only listed absence is center Iliana Rupert, out for the season. Allisha Gray isn't on the report, but she has been playing through a hand injury. Both teams come in on two days' rest after another cross-country trip.
Valkyries vs. Dream Predictions
- Pick #1: Naz Hillmon Under 6.5 Points (-137)
- Pick #2: Angel Reese Over 2.5 Assists (-109)
- Pick #3: Gabby Williams Under 17.5 Points (-124)
PICK #1: Naz Hillmon Under 6.5 Points (-137)
Hillmon has started all five Finals games and played 27 to 36 minutes in each, but her job is rebounding and defense. She has scored 5, 2, 15, 6 and 2, under 6.5 in four of the five, and half of her 30 series points came in one night. In Game 5 she grabbed 11 rebounds and scored 2 on 1-for-5 shooting.
We trust those numbers because of who she's facing. Golden State allowed 75.1 points per game in the regular season, the fewest in the league, and Atlanta scored 64, 62 and 55 in its three losses. With Kiah Stokes, Veronica Burton and Williams each playing close to 30 minutes, Golden State keeps its best defenders on the floor, and the Dream turned it over 18 and 17 times in Games 4 and 5, which leaves fewer misses for her to put back.
At -137, the Under implies a 57.8% chance. The risk is a repeat of Game 3, when she scored 15 in Atlanta's 97-71 win. Atlanta averaged 91.3 points in the regular season, third in the league, and if the Dream beat the pressure and push the pace, Hillmon gets more open looks around the rim. Five games is a small sample, but every one of them came against this defense.
PICK #2: Angel Reese Over 2.5 Assists (-109)
Golden State has made life hard for Reese inside, and her scoring has dried up: 2-for-12 with 8 points in Game 4, 2-for-8 with 7 points in Game 5. Her passing held up. She had 3 and 5 assists in those two losses, and Rhyne Howard scored 19 and 20 alongside her.
Reese has 0, 3, 3, 3 and 5 assists in the series, over 2.5 in four of five games, in 33 to 35 minutes a night. Her 15 rebounds in Game 5 also start possessions with the ball in her hands. At -109, the Over implies 52.2%.
The worry is Game 1, when she had no assists in a 68-64 loss. If Golden State lets her play one-on-one and she gets hot, as she did in Games 2 and 3 when she averaged 25.5 points and 14 rebounds, more of her touches end in her own shot. She still had 3 assists in each of those games.
PICK #3: Gabby Williams Under 17.5 Points (-124)
Williams opened the Finals with 26 points and hasn't reached 18 since: 14, 15, 17 and 9. Her minutes aren't the reason. She has played 27 to 37 minutes every night and is one of the three Golden State players carrying the heaviest load since the rotation shrank, including 34 minutes in Game 5 when she scored 9.
Atlanta's defense is the reason her scoring has leveled off. The Dream allowed 84.5 points per game in the regular season, fourth-fewest in the league, and Golden State scored 82.2, tied for 13th of 15 teams. The Valkyries won Games 4 and 5 with 67 and 64 points, and a team that wins like that doesn't need its top scorer to carry it.
The -124 price works out to 55.4%. A closeout game can bring out a team's best scorer, and her 26 came in Game 1, a 68-64 game, so a slow pace alone doesn't cap her. She needs Atlanta's defense to keep doing what it did in Games 2 through 5.
