Atlanta leads the best-of-seven WNBA Finals 2-1 and hosts Game 4 at State Farm Arena, with tipoff at 1:00 PM ET. Golden State won the opener 68-64 on Oct. 17 at Chase Center, Atlanta took Game 2 there 79-65 on Oct. 19, and the Dream won Game 3 at home 97-71 on Wednesday. Game 5 is Monday at Chase Center.

Golden State's defense has set the terms of this series. The Valkyries allowed 75.1 points a game in the regular season, fewest in the league, and swept the three regular-season meetings. Atlanta has made 20 of 72 threes in the Finals (27.8%), and its two wins were built elsewhere: 24 and 22 points off Golden State turnovers in Games 2 and 3, plus a 44-20 edge in the paint in Game 3. Golden State's offense has stalled too. It has scored 68, 65 and 71 and has not shot 35% from the field in any Finals game, which leaves plenty of long rebounds for Atlanta's guards.

Both picks come from that game: Atlanta stays cold from outside against this defense, and Golden State's misses keep landing with Atlanta's backcourt. Atlanta is a 5.5-point favorite. Brionna Jones (left leg) is out for Atlanta and has not played in the series. Allisha Gray has played all three Finals games through a left-hand injury. Golden State's only listed absence is center Iliana Rupert, out for the season.

Valkyries vs. Dream Predictions

  • Pick #1: Rhyne Howard Under 2.5 Threes (-156)
  • Pick #2: Jordin Canada Over 3.5 Rebounds (-150)

PICK #1: Rhyne Howard Under 2.5 Threes (-156)

Golden State has kept Howard under this number in five of their six meetings this season.

She made 1, 1 and 4 threes in the regular-season games, then 2, 1 and 1 in the Finals, which adds up to 10 of 40 from deep (25%). Her attempts have dropped each game of the series, from 9 to 5 to 2. Foul trouble has kept her to 27 minutes in each of the last two games (4 fouls in Game 2, 5 in Game 3), and her impact has come elsewhere: 16 points in Game 3 with one three and 10 free-throw attempts, and 6 and 5 steals in the two Atlanta wins.

At -156 the price implies about a 60.9% chance. Her season is the risk. Howard made 134 threes on 377 attempts over 43 regular-season games, 3.1 a game on 8.8 tries, so a normal night clears this line. Her one big game against Golden State was a 4-for-11 night in Atlanta on July 4, and a close game would keep her on the floor longer than the last two lopsided ones did. Six games against this defense still outweigh her season average at this price.

PICK #2: Jordin Canada Over 3.5 Rebounds (-150)

Canada needs four rebounds, and she has reached that in five of six games against Golden State.

She had 4, 3 and 4 in the regular-season meetings and 5, 7 and 6 in the Finals, nearly all on the defensive glass (5, 6 and 5 defensive rebounds). Her Finals minutes are up, 38, 36 and 33 against a 31.1 regular-season average, and Golden State has given her plenty to chase with 53, 40 and 45 missed shots in the three games. Gray has played in all three Finals games, so those numbers already account for her.

The -150 price works out to a 60.0% break-even. Her regular-season average was exactly 3.5 (151 rebounds in 43 games), so the edge depends on the matchup and the extra minutes. A hot shooting day from Golden State would mean fewer misses to grab, and a blowout could cut her playing time. Game 3 helps on that second point: Atlanta won by 26, and she still played 33 minutes and grabbed 6.

Both picks need Game 4 to look like the rest of the Finals, a game on Golden State's defensive terms with Atlanta doing its damage inside and on the boards.
