Odds as of Oct 17, 5:06 AM ET

Utah comes to Boulder 5-0, ranked 11th and yet to fail against the spread. Colorado is 2-3 and has lost three straight, scoring 7 at Northwestern, 13 at Baylor and 7 against Texas Tech. Now that offense meets a Utah defense that has allowed 65 points in five games. Deion Sanders named Isaac Wilson, the former Utah quarterback, his starter this week. Wilson threw for 290 yards against Texas Tech, along with three interceptions.

The line has hardly budged. Utah is -14.5, right where it opened on Oct 11, and -752 on the moneyline, while the total has slipped from 50.5 to 49.5. Colorado comes off a bye. Utah took its off week on Oct 3, then beat Kansas on Oct 10.

This one doesn't start until 10:15 PM ET on ESPN, and the Folsom Field forecast is clear and in the mid-50s, with a light west breeze. We're betting on one game: Utah runs the ball and pulls away, and Colorado doesn't score enough to keep it close or push it over the total.

Utah vs. Colorado Predictions

  • Pick #1: Under 49.5 (-112)
  • Pick #2: Utah -14.5 (-111)

PICK #1: Under 49.5 (-112)

Colorado's four games against major-college teams produced 14, 7, 13 and 7 points for the Buffaloes, and all four stayed under 49.5: 27 combined points at Georgia Tech, 48 at Northwestern, 36 at Baylor and 36 against Texas Tech. The one time they lit up a scoreboard, it was 52 against Weber State of the FCS.

Utah won't make it easier. The Utes shut out Utah State, held Arkansas to 10 and allowed 17 at Iowa State and 24 to Kansas. Colorado also coughed it up four times against both Texas Tech and Northwestern.

Utah's offense is the threat to this one. The Utes average 42.8 points, and two of their four major-college games cleared this number (65 points against Kansas, 53 against Arkansas). Put both teams' major-college games together, though, and six of eight landed under 49.5, well clear of the 52.8% that -112 implies. A Utah win that looks like its 31-17 game at Iowa State stays under too.

PICK #2: Utah -14.5 (-111)

Utah has covered all five of its games, and the ground game is the reason. The Utes ran for 287 yards against Kansas and 205 at Iowa State, with Wayshawn Parker going for 171 and 174 in those two, and Devon Dampier has led them in passing every week. Against major-college opponents they beat Kansas by 17, Utah State by 33 and Arkansas by 33. Only the 14-point win at Iowa State would have missed this number.

Colorado has lost three of four against major-college opponents, by 34 at Northwestern, 10 at Baylor and 22 against Texas Tech, and its lone such win was 14-13 at Georgia Tech. In their last two games, the Buffaloes ran for just 83 yards at Baylor and 78 against Texas Tech. The -111 price implies 52.6%.

The half point matters. Utah's only road game against a major-college team was that 14-point win in Ames, and the Utes are without cornerback JC Hart and linebacker Preston Pitts on the latest conference report. But an offense that managed 7, 13 and 7 against Big Ten and Big 12 defenses needs a lot more than that to stay within two touchdowns of this one.
