US Open Women’s Singles Semifinal Picks

And then there were four... The field of 128 in women’s singles competition at the U.S. Open will dwindle all the way down to two following what should be a thrilling night of action on Thursday. Aryna Sabalenka, Jessica Pegula, Naomi Osaka and Amanda Anisimova are taking the court. Two of them (Sabalenka and Osaka) are multi-time major champions; the other two (Pegula and Anisimova) are major finalists.
Let’s discuss the odds and the best bets to take for a blockbuster lineup in primetime in New York City.

PICK #1: Amanda Anisimova ML over Naomi Osaka (+100)
Anisimova and Osaka will be squaring off for the third time in their careers. The head-to-head series is being swept 2-0 by the American, and she has a good chance to make it three in a row over Osaka. Anisimova could not have more momentum behind her heading into this match after delivering what could not have been a more impressive performance in Wednesday’s quarterfinals.
Two months after being issued a 6-0, 6-0 double-bagel by Iga Swiatek in the Wimbledon title match, Anisimova completely turned the tables and defeated Swiatek 6-4, 6-3 at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. What a mental hurdle to overcome – to say nothing of the awesome level of tennis that was on display by Anisimova. Of course, playing great tennis is nothing new for the 24-year-old. She is up to No. 9 in the world and will climb to at least No. 5 on Monday (No. 4 if she wins one more match). Since losing her only set of the tournament in round three, Anisimova has reeled off five victorious sets in a row by scores of 6-2, 6-0, 6-3, 6-4 and 6-3.
Osaka is obviously a tough opponent, but the world No. 24 has yet to prove to be back at the level that took her to a quartet of major titles between the fall of 2018 and February of 2021. This is her first Grand Slam semifinal appearance since giving birth to her first child. It has been a commendable run for the Japanese veteran, but she does not have any value as a slight favorite in this matchup, given that her peak years may be behind her and she is facing an opponent who is on the rise. As Anisimova has shown in the past, she wields a big-hitting game that can disrupt Osaka’s timing and draw a lot of errors. We may see that play out again tonight.
PICK #2: Aryna Sabalenka -1.5 Sets over Jessica Pegula (-102)
This is a rematch of the 2024 U.S. Open final, won by Sabalenka in straight sets. That result was nothing new in this particular matchup. Sabalenka is dominating the head-to-head series 7-2, and all seven of her victories have come in straight sets. The Belarusian has not even been extended to a single tiebreaker in those seven wins. She has won three in a row – all on outdoor hard courts – at Pegula’s expense heading into Thursday after most recently getting the job done 7-5, 6-2 earlier this season in Miami.
Now they once again meet at a Grand Slam, of which Sabalenka has won three in her career while reaching three other finals. Pegula has never advanced to any other major final outside of New York 12 months ago. Sabalenka is the No. 1 player in the world for a reason. She is the biggest hitter on tour and should yet again have too much firepower in these relatively fast conditions for Pegula.
