South Florida vs. UTSA Prediction, CFB Week 6 Odds & Best Bets (10/8)

Fact checked at 6:46 AM ET, Oct 8, 2026
Odds as of Oct 8, 4:36 AM ET; Pick #3 price as of 6:45 AM ET
Both of these teams are 4-1, and both just played rock fights. South Florida lost 17-13 at home to Temple on Saturday. UTSA won 16-14 at Rice. Now they meet on a five-day turnaround, with the Bulls traveling to Texas for it.
UTSA is a 7-point favorite, and the consensus total is 50.5 (49.5 at some books). The spread opened at UTSA -6.5 on Sunday and has barely budged. The total is another story: it opened at 57.5 at one book Sunday morning, was 55.5 at another that afternoon, and has been falling since.
We expect a low-scoring game that stays close. South Florida's defense has kept every FBS opponent within 10 points. UTSA's offense has sputtered outside of two big home games. And the Bulls can't score enough to pull away from anyone. So we're on the Under, we're taking the touchdown with South Florida, and we're betting UTSA stays under its team total.
Michael Van Buren Jr. is expected to start at quarterback for the Bulls, Owen McCown for the Roadrunners. The offensive lines are the bigger question. South Florida played Temple without offensive linemen Thomas Shrader and Michael Wooten, and UTSA left guard Ben Rios, who missed the Rice game, is a game-time decision.
Kickoff is Thursday, Oct. 8, at 7:30 PM ET at the Alamodome in San Antonio, on ESPN. The game is indoors, so weather won't matter.
South Florida vs. UTSA Predictions
- Pick #1: Under 50.5 (-114)
- Pick #2: South Florida +7 (-117)
- Pick #3: UTSA Team Total Under 28.5 (-118)
PICK #1: Under 50.5 (-114)
South Florida's offense has been bad against FBS teams. The Bulls scored 19 against FIU, 28 against Army, 14 against Bowling Green and 13 against Temple, which works out to 18.5 a game. The 59 they hung on FCS Delaware State doesn't count for much. They're 110th nationally in total offense (344.2 yards per game), and against FBS opponents they average 4 first-half points.
Their defense is good enough to make that hold up. South Florida allows 14.6 points per game, 19th in the country, and nobody has scored more than 24 on it. Three of its four FBS games went under 50.5 total points; the other finished at 52. It held Temple to 17 without six starters, including its top two tacklers, Ayden Jackson and Sam Robinson. That result already reflects their absence, so if either one plays, it's a bonus. The bet doesn't depend on them.
UTSA hasn't scored much on the road: 31 at Texas State, 6 at Texas, 16 at Rice. At Rice it came up empty on its last six possessions. Jeff Traylor was blunt about it this week: "Our offense has not been near what it's capable of being. We're just surviving with a really good defense."
You're laying -114 here, a 53.3% implied chance, and a lot of the value left when the number dropped. The worry is the Alamodome. UTSA put up 45 on FCS UTRGV and 59 on Colorado State at home, and the Colorado State game ended 59-45. If McCown finds that home rhythm, this total is in trouble. Overtime points count, too.
PICK #2: South Florida +7 (-117)
South Florida has played four FBS games this year. All four were decided by 10 points or fewer, and the average margin was 6.5. One of them was the Temple loss, by 4, with six starters out. Asking UTSA to win by more than a touchdown in a game this low-scoring is asking a lot.
The Roadrunners haven't been crushing FBS teams anyway. They beat Texas State by 5, Colorado State by 14 and Rice by 2, and lost by 24 at Texas. The Bulls also don't hand out free possessions. Van Buren hasn't thrown an interception in 123 attempts, the team has four turnovers all season, and South Florida has outscored opponents 89-26 in second halves.
This isn't a cheap price. At -117 the break-even is 53.9%, and a UTSA win by exactly 7 is a push. We're fine paying it for the full touchdown in a game that could come down to field goals.
The first risk is the building. UTSA is 35-5 at the Alamodome under Traylor and 25-1 there against conference opponents since 2020. South Florida has never won in the Alamodome; its only trip, in 2023, ended in a 49-21 loss. The Bulls have also trailed at halftime in three of their last four games, and if Will Henderson III gets UTSA's running game going, the clock works against them. Final availability for Jackson, Robinson, Shrader and Wooten, and for Rios, could tip this either way.
PICK #3: UTSA Team Total Under 28.5 (-118)
Nobody has scored more than 24 on South Florida this year. FIU got 9, Army 24, Delaware State 17, Bowling Green 6 and Temple 17, so not one of the five opponents reached 28.5. The Bulls are 17th in the country in tackles for loss, and Traylor himself called their defense "freakishly good."
Away from the Alamodome, UTSA has scored 31 at Texas State, 6 at Texas and 16 at Rice. It ranks 118th in third-down conversions (.328), and the line still isn't settled: Rios is a game-time decision, and A'Marion Breland and Jonah Miller split the left tackle job at Rice.
At -118, the implied chance is 54.1%. The danger is the same home offense we flagged with the Under.
All three picks cash in the same kind of night: slow and low on points, with neither offense able to pull away. They share one risk, too: if UTSA scores the way it has at the Alamodome, that hurts all three.
