The College Football Playoff continues to break new ground as No. 1 Indiana meets No. 5 Oregon in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl semifinal on Friday, January 9. Kickoff is set for 7:30 PM ET from Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, with ESPN carrying the broadcast.

Indiana’s rise from the losingest FBS program to unbeaten national title contender has been one of the sport’s defining stories, while Oregon’s evolution from its long-forgotten football past to modern powerhouse continues under Dan Lanning. These teams already met once this season, with Indiana winning 30-20 in Eugene, and now the rematch comes with a national title berth at stake.

At some point, Indiana’s run stops being a “story” and simply becomes reality. The Hoosiers are 14-0, have won the Big Ten outright for the first time in nearly 80 years and just physically dominated Alabama in a Rose Bowl thrashing. They already proved they can beat Oregon convincingly on the road, in one of the most difficult environments in college football.

Indiana controlled the line of scrimmage, ran the ball effectively, and held Oregon without an offensive touchdown for more than 50 minutes. Even with Fernando Mendoza throwing a pick-six early in the fourth quarter, the Ducks never seriously threatened.

Oregon will be better prepared this time around and nobody is better than Dan Lanning at firing up a team, but Indiana has consistently answered adjustments all season. Curt Cignetti’s group thrives on forcing opponents to execute perfectly, snapping after snapping. The Hoosiers disguise coverages and  blitz selectively. Dante Moore struggled mightily in the first meeting, and while he’s capable of a big game, Indiana’s offensive balance and defensive discipline wear out anyone and will be too much to overcome.

Until someone proves Indiana can be beaten, backing the unbeaten No. 1 seed to cover a short number on a neutral field makes sense.

Playoff rematches often trend lower scoring. Strip away the volatility from the first meeting, and what you saw were two teams grinding through long possessions and struggling to generate explosive plays consistently.

Indiana wants to control tempo with Roman Hemby and its physical offensive line, keeping Mendoza out of obvious passing situations. Oregon prefers to establish the run to unlock play-action, but Indiana’s linebackers are elite at fitting gaps and forcing third-and-longs. Oregon’s freakish tight end Kenyon Sadiq must play a factor for the Ducks over the middle of the field to snap IU out of its 2-high looks.

Both defenses are peaking at the right time. Oregon just shut out a Texas Tech offense that had been one of the most explosive units in the country, while Indiana overwhelmed Alabama at the point of attack, combining to allow 3 total points in the quarters. With so much familiarity and so much on the line, expect conservative early play-calling, clock-draining drives and limited risk-taking.

A game played largely between the tackles points toward something closer to the low-40s than another shootout.

If there’s one individual matchup Indiana can lean on again, it’s Elijah Sarratt versus Oregon’s corners. In the first meeting, Sarratt was the best player on the field, torching the Ducks for eight catches, 121 yards and a game-sealing touchdown.

Since returning from injury, Sarratt’s yardage totals have dipped, but the usage and trust haven’t gone anywhere. He has scored a touchdown in every game he’s played since mid-September, and Mendoza consistently looks his way in the red zone.

Oregon’s defense has improved dramatically, but it still features young corners who can be challenged in contested-catch situations. With Indiana likely needing to finish drives through the air rather than relying solely on the run, Sarratt profiles as the Hoosiers’ most reliable red-zone weapon. At plus money, backing his touchdown production to show up again is a strong play.
