Ohio (6-2, 4-0 MAC) visits Akron (1-7, 0-4 MAC) at 7:00 PM ET at InfoCision Stadium on ESPN2, and the Bobcats are 14-point favorites. We think Ohio wins. We also think Akron's offense does what it has done since Brayden Roggow took over at quarterback: Jordan Gant carries the load near the goal line, and Roggow spends the second half throwing to catch up. Both picks are bets on the Zips moving the ball in a loss.

Roggow has started every game since Cibastian Broughton hurt his knee against Minnesota, and he is the projected starter again.

Ohio vs. Akron Predictions

  • Pick #1: Jordan Gant Anytime Touchdown (-120)
  • Pick #2: Brayden Roggow 170+ Passing Yards (-193)

PICK #1: Jordan Gant Anytime Touchdown (-120)

Since Roggow took over, Akron's offense has mostly been Gant. He carried 20, 17, 22, 15 and 28 times over the last five games and scored in four of them: once against UNLV, once at Central Michigan, once at Miami (OH) and twice at Kent State. The full season looks thinner. With Broughton at quarterback he split the backfield, getting eight carries at Wake Forest and five at Minnesota without a score, so he has found the end zone in four of Akron's seven games against FBS teams. We're betting on the lead-back version, because that's the role he has now.

Kent State is why a lopsided score doesn't scare us off. Akron lost that one 35-20, yet it outgained the Golden Flashes 422-376 and led 17-14 in the third quarter, and Gant finished with 28 carries, 162 yards and two touchdowns. He has six rushing touchdowns on the season and averages 77.3 rushing yards a game.

At -120 the implied chance is 54.5%. Ohio's defense is the real obstacle. It has allowed 10, 14, 7 and 20 points over its last four games, and if Akron's drives keep dying before the red zone, or the Zips score through the air instead, this loses.

PICK #2: Brayden Roggow 170+ Passing Yards (-193)

Two different records point the same way here. Roggow has thrown for 194, 180, 229, 234 and 275 yards in his five starts, on anywhere from 24 to 38 attempts. And Ohio, for all the points it keeps off the board, has given up at least 170 passing yards to five of its seven FBS opponents: 275 to Nebraska, 286 to Jacksonville State in a four-overtime game, 192 to South Alabama, 217 to Kent State and 197 to Eastern Michigan. Central Michigan (154) and Sacramento State (140) were the only ones held under.

The game script fits. A two-touchdown underdog throws in the second half, and that's the same night that hands Gant his early carries.

This isn't a bargain. -193 implies 65.9%, and Roggow has thrown nine interceptions in five starts, four of them at Miami (OH). Akron is already on its third choice at quarterback, and a benching after an ugly first half would sink this. When he took most of the snaps in relief at Minnesota, he threw for 131. Ohio also ran the ball 50 times against Central Michigan, and every long, slow Bobcats drive is one less Akron possession. If he starts and gets pulled, it loses.
