Odds as of Oct 17, 6:52 AM ET

North Carolina (3-2) makes the short drive to Durham for the Victory Bell, and this one should be settled on the ground. Duke has run for 250, 170, 268 and 159 yards in its four games against major-college opponents. North Carolina's defense has given up 150 or more rushing yards in three of its four, including 241 to Notre Dame. Flip it around and the Tar Heels look stuck: 20 rushing yards on 25 carries at Pittsburgh, 77 against Notre Dame. Their offense is Billy Edwards Jr. throwing, and not much else.

The weather helps the team that can hand off. The National Weather Service expects the rain to clear out before kickoff, but a north wind around 15 mph, gusting as high as 26, should stick around and ease only slowly through the afternoon. That hurts an offense that lives on shots downfield, like the 75-yard touchdown pass that beat Pittsburgh.

Then there's Nate Sheppard. Duke's back has 743 yards on 118 carries and is questionable with the ankle he hurt at Georgia Tech, where he came back in with it taped. Veteran center Matt Craycraft is questionable too. North Carolina is short in the back end, with defensive backs Tre Miller and Kaleb Cost listed out.

Duke opened -4.5 and sits at -3, while the total has fallen from 54.5 to 46.5. It kicks off at 3:30 PM ET at Wallace Wade Stadium, on ESPN2.

North Carolina vs. Duke Predictions

  • Pick #1: Duke -3 (-110)
  • Pick #2: Jeremiah Hasley 36+ Receiving Yards (-116)

PICK #1: Duke -3 (-110)

Duke can run the ball and North Carolina can't. A field goal is not much to lay for that edge.

The Blue Devils are 4-1 and covered four of those five, beating Tulane 17-3, winning 31-27 at Illinois as an underdog and handling Stanford 35-7. The one loss was 28-25 at Georgia Tech, a game Duke out-gained 418 yards to 383. Their defense has held three of four major-college opponents to 111 rushing yards or fewer, which matters against a North Carolina team that has topped 100 on the ground once against major-college opponents, at Clemson.

This one rides on Sheppard. Duke opened -4.5 on Oct 4, before the Georgia Tech loss and the ankle, and the number has slid to -3. Behind him, CJ Campbell Jr. has 144 yards on 33 carries against major-college defenses, so the ground game is mostly one man. With Sheppard in the lineup, we want the better rushing team at home in the wind, at -110 (52.4% implied).

PICK #2: Jeremiah Hasley 36+ Receiving Yards (-116)

Duke's tight end has 39, 88, 53 and 36 yards in four games against major-college defenses, so he has not missed this number once. The opener against Tulane tells you the most. Duke ran it 49 times, threw only 28 passes, and Hasley still got to 36 on two catches. At Georgia Tech, when Duke had to throw 42 times, he caught six balls. His only miss came in the 62-7 rout of William & Mary, when the passes went to a dozen receivers.

North Carolina gave up 234 passing yards to Notre Dame and 219 to Pittsburgh with Miller and Cost on the field, and both are out.

At -116 the break-even is 53.7%, for a player who cleared the mark even in the run-heaviest game Duke has played. The wind is a real problem for him, since his catches have averaged 17 to 18 yards in three of those four games.
