Miami vs Florida State Best Picks October 4th

One of the fiercest rivalries in college football renews Saturday night as No. 18 Florida State hosts No. 3 Miami under the lights in Tallahassee. Kickoff is set for 7:30 PM ET on ABC, and the matchup carries ACC Championship and College Football Playoff implications.

Both teams enter Week 6 with very different emotions. Florida State (3-1) is coming off its first loss of the season, a double-overtime heartbreaker at Virginia in which the defense gave up more than 200 rushing yards. Miami (4-0), meanwhile, comes off a bye and rolled over Florida two weeks ago behind another dominant effort from its offensive line and the punishing running of sophomore back Mark Fletcher Jr.

The Hurricanes have been touted as one of the nation’s most complete teams, but this is their first road test, and it comes against a Seminoles squad eager to bounce back. With Miami’s slow tempo and physicality versus FSU’s uptempo, RPO-driven attack, bettors have some intriguing angles to consider. Let’s get into the best plays for Saturday night:

Miami vs Florida State Predictions

Pick #1: Florida State Seminoles +4.5 vs Miami Hurricanes (-105) Click Here to Bet

Pick #2: Under 54 (-110) Click Here to Bet

Pick #3: Elija Loftin (MIA) Anytime Touchdown Scorer (+300) Click Here to Bet

Pick #1: Florida State +4.5 vs Miami (-105) Click Here to Bet

At -4.5, it’s tempting to lay the points with Miami, but in a rivalry, with FSU coming off a loss, it feels just too good to be true. The Hurricanes boast what might be the best offensive and defensive line combo in the nation, anchored by the best defensive player in the country in Rueben Bain Jr. Their defense gives up just 11.5 points per game (9th in FBS), while the rushing attack, led by Fletcher, has worn down every opponent so far.

The Seminoles have their flaws, especially in run defense, as exposed by Virginia’s 211 rushing yards last week, but they’re also built to stress Miami in ways Florida and Notre Dame could not. Quarterback Tommy Castellanos is dangerous as a dual threat, while RB Gavin Sawchuk has been efficient around the goal line with six rushing TDs.

FSU is also excellent on third down (58.8%, 6th in FBS) and has enough weapons via Duce Robinson and its RPO scheme to keep the chains moving. Add in the emotional boost of returning home after a crushing loss, and the Seminoles profile as a live underdog.

The Hurricanes might still win, but betting against Florida State as a home dog in this spot feels like the right side. Take the points with Florida State.

Pick #2: Under 54 (-110) Click Here to Bet

At first glance, it’s easy to expect points in bunches. Florida State averages 53.0 points per game, which tops in the nation, while Miami puts up 36.8 ppg despite low-tempo play. After digging deeper, the under emerges as the sharper angle.

Miami’s deliberate pace ranks 12th in time of possession (33:38 per game). When the Hurricanes build a lead, head coach Mario Cristobal leans into clock control, pounding the ball behind an elite line. That’s especially true on the road, where Cristobal will want to minimize possessions and let his defense control the game.

Florida State, on the other hand, thrives on pace and chaos. But against Miami’s elite defensive front (8th in FBS in rushing defense), explosive plays may be harder to come by. The Hurricanes can match-up physically, and will look to contain Castellanos’ scrambling ability by playing disciplined zone coverage.

The Seminoles’ defensive front has its issues, but it’s not likely to be gashed to the same degree two weeks in a row. With Miami intent on shortening the game and FSU trying to protect its quarterback, expect fewer total possessions than the market projects. That makes under 54 the right play.

Pick #3: Elija Loftin (MIA) Anytime Touchdown Scorer (+300) Click Here to Bet

If you’re hunting for player-prop value, Elija Loftin Anytime TD at +300 fits the bill. Miami’s backfield is crowded with Fletcher, CharMar Brown and possibly Jordan Lyle returning. While Fletcher’s rushing prop (85.5) looks tempting, sharing carries makes it tricky to back his over.

Instead, Loftin, the Hurricanes’ talented tight end, is a sneaky option. Florida State’s linebackers have been vulnerable in coverage, giving up chunk plays in the middle of the field. Quarterback Carson Beck doesn’t force throws when he doesn’t need to, and in the red zone, he may look to Loftin on seams or quick outs rather than testing Miami’s trio of running backs against a stacked box.

The Hurricanes coaching staff loves Loftin’s upside, and this feels like the kind of high-leverage game where he could finally break out. At +300, the price is too good to ignore.
