Atlanta took Game 1 of this best-of-five semifinal 92-82 on Sunday, and it will try to go up 2-0 without its leading scorer. Allisha Gray hurt her left shooting hand in the opener. She left at the end of the first quarter, came back in the second, hurt it again and was ruled out shortly before halftime with seven points in 11 minutes. On Tuesday coach Karl Smesko ruled her out of Game 2 with what he called a finger injury and listed her as day-to-day. That is a big loss: Gray averaged 19.0 points in the regular season and 22.0 in the first-round sweep of Washington. Still, the Dream won Game 1 without her in the second half. New York led 40-37 at the break and then lost the third quarter 32-15.

The market noticed the injury. Atlanta opened -3.5 and is now -1.5, the moneyline has gone from Liberty +120 and Dream -145 to +102 and -124, and the total has slipped from 172.5 to 170.5. Gray's absence explains most of that, so we're not chasing the side. The bet is narrower: Jonquel Jones on the glass, in the matchup where she has been at her best all season. New York's starting five of Sabrina Ionescu, Pauline Astier, Leonie Fiebich, Breanna Stewart and Jones has started all three Liberty playoff games, including the 91-75 and 87-71 sweep of Minnesota. Game 3 is Friday, so nobody's season ends Wednesday.

Game 2 tips Wednesday at 7:30 PM ET at State Farm Arena in Atlanta, on ESPN.

Liberty vs. Dream Predictions

  • Pick #1: Jonquel Jones Over 9.5 Rebounds (-133)

PICK #1: Jonquel Jones Over 9.5 Rebounds (-133)

Atlanta brings out the best in Jones on the boards. She has reached double digits in all four games she has played against the Dream this season: 10 in June, 12 on Sep 21, 14 on Sep 23 (in only 20 minutes) and 11 in Game 1, nine of them on the defensive glass in 32 minutes.

You need that matchup history, because her season numbers alone don't get there. She averaged 9.1 rebounds in 28.2 minutes during the regular season and reached 10 in 21 of her 43 games. The playoffs have given her more floor time, though: 32, 32 and 26 minutes in three postseason starts, with 13 rebounds in the clincher over Minnesota and five in 26 minutes in the first-round opener. Stretch her regular-season rate to 32 minutes and you get about 10 a night. Against Atlanta she has beaten that.

This isn't a bargain. -133 works out to a 57.1% chance, and there are ways to lose it. Her one miss in the last five came in a 26-minute game, so foul trouble or a blowout would cost her the minutes she needs. Angel Reese, whose rebound line sits at 11.5, starts up front for Atlanta alongside Naz Hillmon. And DeWanna Bonner, who started the second half of Game 1 in Gray's spot, pulled down nine rebounds in 30 minutes. If Bonner starts, the Dream get bigger than they were with Gray, and some of the defensive boards Jones has been living on could go elsewhere.
