Odds as of Oct 17, 6:43 AM ET

Kentucky shows up in Norman at 5-1 and ranked 15th, with two straight one-point overtime wins behind it: 35-34 at South Carolina and 35-34 over LSU. Oklahoma is 3-2 and beat Texas 27-24 in Dallas last week, on 238 yards of offense. Since a 51-0 opener against UTEP, the Sooners have scored 10 at Michigan, 14 against New Mexico, 13 at Georgia and 27 against Texas.

That offense is about to get thinner. Linemen Michael Fasusi, Eddy Pierre-Louis and Heath Ozaeta are all doubtful on the SEC availability report, and receivers Parker Livingstone and Trell Harris are out. Fasusi hasn't played since the opener, so his absence is nothing new. Ozaeta's is, and it likely puts a sophomore transfer at guard for his first career start. On Kentucky's side, running back CJ Baxter is questionable after briefly leaving the LSU game, and his status may not be settled until close to kickoff.

Kentucky has been the steadier offense. It has gained at least 394 yards in four straight games since a September loss to Alabama, and Kenny Minchey threw 41 and 36 times in the two overtime wins. Set that against an Oklahoma attack that hasn't pulled away from anyone but UTEP, and this looks like a game that stays close all the way, with Minchey throwing and his top receiver getting fed.

Oklahoma is a 6.5-point favorite, the same number it opened at, and the total has moved from 41.5 to 43.5. The 7:30 PM ET kickoff at Memorial Stadium is on SEC Network, and the forecast is clear, calm and in the upper 50s.

Kentucky vs. Oklahoma Predictions

  • Pick #1: Kentucky +6.5 (-108)
  • Pick #2: Kenny Darby 50+ Receiving Yards (+106)

PICK #1: Kentucky +6.5 (-108)

Kentucky has scored at least 31 points in four straight games. If it gets anywhere close to that, Oklahoma needs a big night from an offense that has topped 27 points once this season, against UTEP. The Sooners' last four games were decided by 7, 8, 28 and 3 points, and the 28 was a 41-13 loss at Georgia.

The Wildcats have won four of their five games against FBS teams: 31-21 at Texas A&M, 45-21 over South Alabama and the two overtime games. The lone loss was 45-17 to Alabama in September, and they've piled up 408, 567, 394 and 401 yards since.

Kentucky's defense is where this could go wrong. It allows about 382 yards a game, it gave up 34 points in each of its last two, and linebackers Antwan Smith and Tavion Wallace, defensive backs Jaden Smith and Grant Grayton and end Tyler Thomas are all out. Oklahoma just isn't built to punish that. It has gained more than 300 yards only against UTEP, and it now plays without three linemen and two receivers. The price is -108, a 51.9% break-even, and Kentucky's chances look better than that.

PICK #2: Kenny Darby 50+ Receiving Yards (+106)

Darby has led Kentucky in receiving yards in each of its last three games, and the two that look most like this one went for 96 and 79 yards. Those were the overtime wins at South Carolina and against LSU, when Minchey threw 41 and 36 times. A one-score game in Norman should keep him throwing about that often.

His two FBS games under 50 looked nothing like this one. He had 45 in the Alabama loss, when Kentucky passed for only 146 yards, and 43 against South Alabama, when the Wildcats ran for 390 and barely needed to throw. He also had 64 at Texas A&M on two catches, one of them a 42-yarder. In all five of those games he caught at least one ball for 22 yards or more.

Oklahoma gives up about 150 passing yards a game, but that number is softer than it looks. UTEP, Michigan and New Mexico threw only 18, 17 and 19 passes. The two SEC teams that did throw each got 110 yards from one receiver: Talyn Taylor on four catches for Georgia, Cam Coleman on five for Texas. At +106, the implied chance is 48.5%, and Darby has reached 50 in three of five against FBS teams. Nic Anderson and DJ Miller have had big days of their own, and a healthy Baxter could tilt Kentucky back toward the run, so the yards won't always flow to Darby.
