James Madison vs. Southern Miss Prediction, CFB Week 10 Odds & Best Bets (11/5)

Fact checked at 6:39 AM ET, Nov 5, 2026
Odds as of 6:13 AM ET, Nov 5, 2026
James Madison (7-2, 4-2 Sun Belt) visits Southern Miss (3-5, 2-2) at 8:00 PM ET at Renasant Stadium in Hattiesburg, on ESPN2. The Dukes are 14.5-point favorites and the total is 57.5. James Madison has dropped two straight in overtime, 34-31 at App State and 24-21 at home to Troy. Southern Miss has won two in a row, 35-31 over Louisiana and 35-21 at ULM. Landry Lyddy is expected to start at quarterback for the Golden Eagles, as he has since Ethan Hampton hurt his hand against UConn.
Our read: James Madison runs on a defense that has been gashed on the ground, gets up by more than two touchdowns, and Southern Miss spends the second half throwing. When it throws, the ball goes to Mario Sanders. Both picks need that same game.
James Madison vs. Southern Miss Predictions
- Pick #1: James Madison -14.5 (-110)
- Pick #2: Mario Sanders 60+ Receiving Yards (-163)
PICK #1: James Madison -14.5 (-110)
Southern Miss's lopsided losses all looked alike. Troy ran for 437 yards in a 55-34 win. Auburn ran for 343 in a 43-8 win, and UConn ran for 213 in a 48-20 win. James Madison runs the ball well, with 310 rushing yards against Marshall, 250 against Georgia State. George Pettaway, its leading rusher, is out again, but Seth Cromwell went for 135 yards on 23 carries against Troy in his first start.
The defense is the other half of it. James Madison allows 18.9 points a game, fewest in the Sun Belt, and held Troy to 179 passing yards. Southern Miss managed 8 points at Auburn, 13 against Arkansas State and 20 against UConn.
The two losses don't scare us off. The Dukes led Troy 21-7 at the half and gave it away with five turnovers, three interceptions and two lost fumbles, before losing in overtime. Camden Coleman has thrown the most passes for them in each of the last five games, with JC Evans mixing in.
At -110 this implies 52.4%, and the margin is a real question. James Madison has won by 15 or more in only 3 of its 8 games against FBS teams: 46-20 at Old Dominion, 45-17 over Marshall and 49-22 over Georgia State. It beat Liberty by 7, San Diego State by 13 and Georgia Southern by 3. We think this matchup looks more like the first group. The Dukes have 69% of the spread money on 52% of the bets.
PICK #2: Mario Sanders 60+ Receiving Yards (-163)
Sanders has 44 catches. Nobody else on Southern Miss has more than 18. His yardage against FBS teams reads 58, 81, 69, 102, 88, 77 and 31, so he has cleared 60 in 5 of 7. The price implies 62.0%, and he has been at 71%.
The bad nights for Southern Miss have been good nights for him. In the three lopsided losses he had 58 at Auburn, 81 against UConn and 102 at Troy. The quarterback hasn't mattered much either: Hampton started at Auburn, Hampton and Lyddy split the throws against UConn, and in Lyddy's five starts Sanders went over 60 four times. James Madison defensive coordinator Robert Bala called him "their go-to guy in their crucial situations."
What sinks this is a game Southern Miss can keep on the ground. At ULM it ran 42 times for 249 yards, Lyddy threw for 130 and Sanders finished with 31. His coach admitted the last couple of weeks have "not been quite as good as we'd like it to be." And the Dukes held Troy to 179 yards through the air. Down two scores, though, Southern Miss can't keep handing it off.
