James Madison vs. Appalachian State Prediction, CFB Week 8 Odds & Best Bets (10/22)

Fact checked at 8:59 AM ET, Oct 22, 2026
Odds as of Oct 22, 8:58 AM ET
James Madison comes to Boone as the only 7-0 team in the country, one of six unbeaten FBS teams left. In Billy Napier's first season the Dukes are 4-0 in the Sun Belt, and they've gotten there on the ground: George Pettaway has run for more than 100 yards in four straight games. Appalachian State is 4-2 and 1-1 in league play. Last Friday it erased a 24-14 halftime deficit and won 35-32 at Coastal Carolina.
The Mountaineers have a quarterback question. Malachi Singleton (ankle) is questionable on the Sun Belt's initial availability report, and Dowell Loggains hasn't named a starter. Singleton started at Coastal and went 12 of 14 for 151 yards in the first half. Henry Hasselbeck played the whole second half and ran 21 times for 125 yards. On the other sideline, Camden Coleman has started James Madison's last six games, with JC Evans coming in for stretches in each of the last two.
James Madison is an 11.5-point favorite after opening at 10.5, and the total is 56.5. Last November in Harrisonburg the Dukes won 58-10, a season before Napier took over. Kickoff is Thursday at 7:00 PM ET at Kidd Brewer Stadium, and the forecast is mostly clear, about 52 degrees with a light northwest wind.
Our read: James Madison runs its way to a two-score road win. Pettaway gets his yards against a front that has let opposing lead backs run all year, and the Dukes' defense holds an App State offense with a quarterback question under 24 points, which no FBS team has topped against it.
James Madison vs. Appalachian State Predictions
- Pick #1: George Pettaway 90+ Rushing Yards (-160)
- Pick #2: James Madison -11.5 (-107)
PICK #1: George Pettaway 90+ Rushing Yards (-160)
Lead backs have found room against App State. In five games against FBS teams, the other side's top runner reached 90 yards four times: East Carolina's Ashton Gray had 99, NC State's Jayden Scott 148, Old Dominion's Devin Roche 101 and Coastal Carolina's Dominic Lee-Knicely 90. Charlotte was the exception, and it ran for 36 yards as a team. The Mountaineers allowed 155 rushing yards a game in those five, and they'll be without defensive lineman Aiden Benton (out) and Jordan Harris (out for the season).
Pettaway ran for 110 at Old Dominion, 206 against Marshall, 151 at Georgia Southern and 119 against Georgia State. He averages 7.0 yards a carry and has had at least 14 carries in each of his last five games. Against FBS teams he's at 90 or better in four of six. The misses were 82 yards on 20 carries at San Diego State and 47 on 15 in the opener against Liberty.
The -160 price works out to 61.5%. Given who he's running against, we think he gets there more often than that.
The streak does hide a thin history. Pettaway ran for 980 yards in 2024 and only 195 last season, so carrying the load like this is new for him. A blowout could also take late carries away; Seth Cromwell got 13 against Georgia State. James Madison has two offensive linemen on the initial report, Deacon Rawls (questionable) and Frankie Tinilau (doubtful). And this pick needs the same James Madison drives the spread does, so a stalled night for the Dukes would sink both.
PICK #2: James Madison -11.5 (-107)
Four of James Madison's six wins over FBS teams came by 13 or more: 13 at San Diego State, 26 at Old Dominion, 28 against Marshall and 27 against Georgia State. The two close ones were the 20-13 opener against Liberty and a 27-24 escape at Georgia Southern. The defense has been the steadier part of the team. No FBS opponent has scored more than 24 against it.
The computer ratings line up with that. An average of 45 public models has James Madison by 16.6, and ESPN's FPI has the Dukes by about 14 with an 84.7% chance to win. At -107 we need them to cover 51.7% of the time.
App State's offense has gone as its quarterback goes. It scored three points at home against Old Dominion on Oct. 10, a game in which Singleton completed 5 of 23 passes. Now it gets James Madison's defense with the starter's ankle still in doubt.
There are reasons to worry. James Madison played Saturday and travels on a short week, while App State played Friday and stays home. The Mountaineers' last three wins came by 3, 5 and 3 points, and they beat James Madison 34-20 the last time the Dukes came to Boone in 2024. Hasselbeck's running turned the second half at Coastal, and Georgia Southern threw for 343 yards on this defense.
