French Open Tennis Men’s Singles Winner Picks

Is Jannik Sinner a lock to win his first French Open title? With Carlos Alcaraz out of the tournament due to a wrist injury, it seems like that would be the case. The odds certainly indicate that Sinner is an overwhelming favorite – even against the entire rest of the field. 

Still, some challengers have realistic hopes of pulling off a surprise. Among them are Alexander Zverev, Casper Ruud, Rafael Jodar, Arthur Fils, Daniil Medvedev, and 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic.

Let’s break down the odds and the best bets to make for the French Open men’s singles event.

Sinner is the overwhelming top choice ahead of Zverev, Djokovic, Ruud, Jodar, and Fils. If you are in the business of backing longshots, among those worth a look are Medvedev, Ben Shelton, and Felix Auger-Aliassime.

PICK #1: Novak Djokovic to win the French Open (+1600) 

If there is one tournament that Sinner might not win right now, it’s the French Open. No opponent is going to beat him fair and square at any location – the only chance is for the Italian to be physically compromised. An event that is played on clay and uses a best-of-five-set format is the prime location for physical issues – not just for Sinner, but for anyone. If the top seed somehow falters, don’t count out Djokovic from the list of players who could capitalize. The 38-year-old Serb may not play a whole lot these days, but he remains extremely motivated at Grand Slams. In fact, Djokovic has reached five consecutive slam semifinals heading into Paris. Being on the opposite side of the bracket from Sinner improves his chances tenfold, too. 

PICK #2: Rafael Jodar to win the French Open (+2000) 

It remains to be seen if a 19-year-old will be able to hold up physically amidst the rigors of having to win the seven best-of-five-set matches on clay that are necessary to lift the French Open trophy. Any skepticism over Jodar’s chances, however, should have gone out the window with Thursday’s draw ceremony. He would not face Sinner until the final and Djokovic until the semis, instead finding himself in a quarter of the bracket with Zverev and a rusty Taylor Fritz. Jodar is coming off back-to-back quarterfinal results in Madrid and Rome, so he is arguably the brightest rising star in tennis right now. 

PICK #3: Daniil Medvedev to win the French Open (+6000) 

Medvedev has a low floor in that he can lose to just about anyone on any given day. Backing him on the money line or the game spread in any individual match probably isn’t a great idea. At the same time, his ceiling remains high. This is a former Grand Slam champion we are talking about (2021 U.S. Open), and he just took a set off Sinner in the Rome semifinals. Outside of Sinner, Medvedev really has just as good a chance as anyone to triumph in Paris, giving him incredible value at long +6000 odds. The Russian would not run into Sinner until the semis, so his draw – although not ideal – could have been much worse.
