Odds as of Oct 13, 5:35 AM ET

FIU and Jacksonville State meet Tuesday night with early Conference USA position on the line. The Gamecocks (4-2, 2-0 in the conference) have won three straight, the last a 27-26 escape at Kennesaw State on Oct. 7. The Panthers (3-2, 1-0) have won two straight, 22-3 over New Mexico State on Oct. 7 and 20-3 over FCS Long Island before that.

Start with FIU's defense. The Panthers allow 12.2 points a game, sixth in the country (a number that includes the FCS Long Island game), and nobody has scored more than 20 on them. Their offense averages 18.8 points, has topped 22 once, and managed 9 and 10 in two road games. The market is leaning the same way: the total opened at 45.5 and sits at 43.5 with 84% of the money on the Under, and Jacksonville State has slipped from -3.5 to -3. We're betting on a low-scoring, one-score game in which FIU keeps Jacksonville State in the low 20s, and both picks cash in that game.

Kickoff is Tuesday at 8:00 PM ET (7:00 PM CT) at AmFirst Stadium in Jacksonville, Ala., on ESPNU. The National Weather Service hourly forecast calls for clear skies, 73 degrees at kickoff and calm wind. No conference availability report exists for this game, so quarterbacks Caden Creel and JJ Kohl are expected starters rather than confirmed ones.

FIU vs. Jacksonville State Predictions

  • Pick #1: Under 43.5 (-108)
  • Pick #2: FIU +3 (-115)

PICK #1: Under 43.5 (-108)

FIU's five games, one of them against FCS Long Island, have finished at 28, 53, 26, 23 and 25 total points. Only the 33-20 win over Buffalo got past 43.5, and FIU has gone under the closing total four times in five tries. The school says the defense has allowed four touchdowns all season and none in its last 11 quarters. Opponents average 156.4 passing yards and 85.4 rushing yards against it.

The run defense is the part that matters here. Jacksonville State runs more than it throws, and Creel is its leading rusher. Of the four FBS defenses the Gamecocks have played, only Kennesaw State held them under 100 rushing yards (74).

Don't expect FIU to push the total up from its side. Kohl has five touchdown passes and seven interceptions, and the Panthers scored 9 at South Florida and 10 at Florida Atlantic. This is their first trip outside Florida this season.

Jacksonville State's scoreboard history is what could sink this. Its games have finished at 56, 56, 58, 36 and 53, plus 40 in the opener at North Dakota State. Two of those six came against FCS teams: the first 56 was a 49-7 home win over Eastern Kentucky, and North Dakota State is also FCS. Some of those numbers are inflated: Ohio was 24-24 after regulation before four overtimes made it 56, and the 58 against Georgia Southern included a Gamecocks punt-return touchdown. Creel is likely the best quarterback FIU has faced, though, and one non-offensive score would hurt. The -108 price implies 51.9%, and FIU's profile gets there.

PICK #2: FIU +3 (-115)

Three points are worth more when the total is 43.5. Jacksonville State's four FBS games were decided by 1 against Kennesaw State, 4 against Georgia Southern (with that punt-return touchdown), 10 against Middle Tennessee and 2 in the four-overtime loss at Ohio.

The line has moved toward FIU. Jacksonville State is down from -3.5 to -3 and from -156 to -145 on the moneyline, and FIU has 60% of the spread bets and 55% of the money. FIU also won the last meeting, 27-21 at home last November.

What worries us is FIU's offense away from Miami. The Panthers lost 19-9 at South Florida and 16-10 at Florida Atlantic, and Jacksonville State is 3-0 at home. FIU coach Willie Simmons said Creel "makes them go," and a big Creel night is the likeliest way this ticket loses. At -115, the break-even is 53.5%. A defense that has held every opponent to 20 or fewer, getting a field goal in a game the market expects to stay in the low 40s, is enough for us.
