Odds as of Oct 15, 8:05 AM ET

East Carolina (3-2, 1-0 American) visits UAB (3-3, 1-1) on Thursday night, and neither team will find much through the air. UAB allows 126.0 passing yards a game, second in the country, and East Carolina has given up one passing touchdown all season. Neither offense averages more than 25 points, so expect the ball to stay on the ground.

UAB has little choice. The Blazers are 129th nationally at 155.8 passing yards a game. Coach Alex Mortensen said he has "zero doubts" about Ryder Burton after the 38-13 loss at Memphis, but Burton hasn't reached 175 yards in any of his last five starts, and UAB has run 49, 51, 34, 31 and 52 times in its last five games. East Carolina has found a ground game too. With Emory Williams expected to make his third straight start at quarterback, TJ Engleman Jr. has run for 99, 129 and 136 yards in the three straight wins since he became the lead back.

East Carolina is a 5.5-point favorite, -205 on the moneyline with UAB at +170. The total opened in the mid-50s on Sunday and has fallen to 47.5, with 82% of the money and 72% of the bets on the Under. That fits a game where both teams run the clock, and both picks here are the two lead backs getting their carries in it.

UAB will probably be without center Adam Lepkowski, who left the Memphis game hurt in the second quarter. Mortensen called him very questionable and indicated it was doubtful he would be ready on a five-day turnaround, which would likely mean a first college start for Cooper Young. The American's availability report for the game is not out yet. Kickoff is Thursday at 7:30 PM ET at Protective Stadium in Birmingham, on ESPN, under clear skies, near 80 degrees at kickoff and with almost no wind.

East Carolina vs. UAB Predictions

  • Pick #1: Roderick Robinson 50+ Rushing Yards (-169)
  • Pick #2: TJ Engleman Jr. 80+ Rushing Yards (-134)

PICK #1: Roderick Robinson 50+ Rushing Yards (-169)

Robinson gets his yards by piling up carries. His longest run all season is 28 yards, yet he has reached 50 in five of UAB's six games: 59 at Illinois, 114 against UL Monroe, 52 at Louisiana, 38 against Navy, 75 against Samford and 65 at Memphis. That's 403 yards on 93 carries, and he has had between 12 and 21 carries every week. His one miss came against Navy, on the low end of that range.

The matchup looks worse on paper than it is. East Carolina leads the country with 10.2 tackles for loss a game and allows 3.2 yards a carry, but that number includes sacks and quarterback runs. Lead backs who got a real workload against the Pirates have produced: Old Dominion's Devin Roche had 102 yards on 18 carries, App State's Jaquari Lewis 73 on 17 and Rice's Tyvonn Byars 111 on 14.

The -169 price works out to a 62.8% chance. The worries are a new center and the scoreboard: a two-score East Carolina lead would cut into UAB's carries. The Blazers kept handing off at Memphis, though, running 49 times in a 25-point loss with 19 of those carries going to Robinson.

PICK #2: TJ Engleman Jr. 80+ Rushing Yards (-134)

Throwing on UAB is hard, and running on the Blazers has been easy. Every FBS opponent has rushed for at least 150 yards against them: 150 at Illinois, 201 by UL Monroe, 225 by Louisiana, 249 by Navy and 230 by Memphis, whose Jaylin Carter went for 132 on 19 carries last week. FCS Samford, with 90, is the only team held under that. UAB gives up 190.8 rushing yards a game.

Engleman is the back who gets those carries for East Carolina now. He ran for 99 yards on 16 carries at Old Dominion, 129 on 10 against North Carolina Central (FCS) and 136 on 14 against Rice. For the season he has 386 yards on 45 carries, 8.6 a pop.

At -134, the implied chance is 57.3%. He hasn't had more than 16 carries in a game, and the big numbers leaned on long runs of 40, 88 and 43 yards; take those away and he had 59, 41 and 93. Head coach Blake Harrell also started pulling starters late against Rice, and UAB's Marlin Dean leads the American with 5.0 sacks and 8.0 tackles for loss. Still, a back with this much burst facing a run defense that has given up 150 or more to every FBS team is worth backing at this price.
