British Open Picks and Golf Predictions

The British Open is glory’s last shot for golfers in 2025, at least when it comes to major championships. We will still have the Ryder Cup and the FedEx Cup Playoffs before this sport embarks on its proverbial “offseason” and gives way to football, but this is the fourth of four major tournaments on the annual calendar. When the Claret Jug is lifted, we won’t have another major to watch until April 2026, when the festivities return to the hallowed grounds of Augusta National for the Masters.

For now, though, let’s stay focused on the upcoming proceedings at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland. Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry have home-course advantage, just as they did in 2019 – when Lowry triumphed in front of his raucous supporters. Since that event six years ago, however, not a single European has captured the Claret Jug. Will the drought continue, or will the silverware go back to one of Europe’s own – and maybe even to another Irishman? Let’s break down the odds and the best bets to make for the 2025 British Open.

2025 British Open Odds

Unsurprisingly, Scottie Scheffler is a considerable favorite to win his first British Open. It would be his second major of the season and fourth overall. McIlroy is also seeking his second in 2025, having previously triumphed at the Masters to famously complete his long-awaited career Grand Slam. Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau, Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa and Ludvig Aberg could also be among the contenders at Portrush.

Here is the short list of favorites:

  • Scottie Scheffler +450
  • Rory McIlroy +700
  • Jon Rahm +1200
  • Bryson DeChambeau +2000
  • Xander Schauffele +2500
  • Ludvig Aberg +2800
  • Tommy Fleetwood +2800
  • Collin Morikawa +3000
  • Viktor Hovland +3000
  • Tyrrell Hatton +3000
  • Shane Lowry +3300

PICK #1: Xander Schauffele to Win the British Open (+2500)

Schauffele began this season on the injured list, but he is heating up in time with one last chance to add to his major haul. The 31-year-old American is the defending champion of this tournament and he also won the PGA Championship in 2024. Schauffele has made the cut in all 12 of his starts this year, including six top-20 efforts in his last nine appearances. He is coming off a T8 showing at the Scottish Open this past week. With an incredible 16 top-10 performances dating back to his debut in 2017, Schauffele absolutely loves the big stage. There is no reason why the world No. 3 can’t go back-to-back and win the Claret Jug once again.

PICK #2: Shane Lowry to Win the British Open (+3300)

You know Lowry is going to be a trendy pick this week. He is playing at home and won this tournament when it was last played at Royal Portrush in 2019. Surprisingly, you can still get him at somewhat lofty +3300 odds – but that might come down as money inevitably flows in on him. Lowry may not be entirely red hot right now, but he does have two runner-up finishes on the PGA Tour in 2025 (Pebble Beach in February and the Truist Championship in May). The 38-year-old skipped the Scottish Open, so he is well-rested and poised for more success at Portrush.

PICK #3: Tommy Fleetwood to Finish Top 10 at the British Open (+250)

Is Fleetwood going to win? Probably not. After all, he infamously has never won a single tournament on the PGA Tour. That being said, the 34-year-old Englishman is a bastion of consistency. He has placed in the top 22 of 21 starts dating back to the Paris Olympics last summer; he has also posted eight top-10 performances at majors, all since June 2017. Fleetwood, who finished second at last month’s Travelers Championship (he had a one-shot lead going into the final hole), has recorded top-10 performances at three of the last five British Opens – including a solo second in 2019 at Portrush.
