BYU vs. TCU Prediction, CFB Week 5 Odds & Best Bets (10/3)

Fact checked at 9:40 AM ET, Oct 3, 2026
Odds as of Oct 3, 6:33 AM ET
BYU is 3-0, No. 10 in the AP poll and fresh off an open date, having beaten FCS Utah Tech 63-7, Arizona 28-17 and Colorado State 41-23 on the road. TCU is 2-2 and 0-1 in the Big 12. The Frogs handled FCS Grambling 63-7 and Arkansas State 31-7, then lost as the favorite to both Power Four teams they've played: 15-10 to North Carolina in Dublin and 21-13 at UCF last week. This game comes down to BYU's run game against TCU's front. BYU averages 44.0 points and 262.7 rushing yards a game, but 308 of those yards came against Utah Tech, and it ran for 148 against Arizona. TCU allows 12.5 points a game. BYU will also be without right tackle Andrew Gentry, who hurt his ankle at Colorado State and had surgery Monday after starting all three games. He is listed out on the Big 12 availability report and has said he hopes to be back by the end of the season.
The line opened BYU -5.5 with a total of 52.5, before TCU played UCF. The consensus as of 6:36 AM ET shows BYU -6.5 and 47.5, though the books actually posting a number have BYU -6, and one has the total at 48.5. Kickoff is Saturday at 7:00 PM ET at Amon G. Carter Stadium in Fort Worth, on ESPN.
BYU vs. TCU Predictions
- Pick #1: TCU +6 (-112)
- Pick #2: Under 47.5 (-106)
- Pick #3: Ed Small 40+ Receiving Yards (+103)
PICK #1: TCU +6 (-112)
TCU's defense has held three of four opponents to 15 points or fewer, and here it gets 6 points at home against a BYU line missing its starting right tackle.
Yes, two of those games were the 7s against FCS Grambling and Arkansas State. But the Power Four teams, North Carolina and UCF, scored only 15 and 21 and ran for 90 and 106 yards. Across its three FBS games TCU has allowed 108.0 rushing yards a game at 3.5 a carry, and stopping the run is the job here. BYU's line isn't whole. Gentry, a two-year starter who had started every game at right tackle since transferring from Michigan, is out, and freshmen Bott Mulitalo and Siosiua Latu-Finau will rotate in his spot. BYU's own offensive line coach called TCU's front "the best defensive line that we faced all year."
The bigger tickets are on TCU. The Frogs have 33% of the spread bets but 46% of the money as of 6:36 AM ET, even though BYU still leads in both. The consensus still lists 6.5 at -110, but the number the books are posting is 6, and that's where we have it: +6 (-112) as of 6:36 AM ET. A six-point BYU win is a push.
Now the worry: TCU's offense, and BYU's depth. The Frogs scored 10 and 13 against North Carolina and UCF, ran for 139 yards on 66 carries in those two games, and lost both as the favorite. BYU's offensive coordinator says the Cougars saw no drop-off at Colorado State when the second-team line came in, 8 yards a carry with the starters and 8 with the backups. BYU allows 15.7 points and 76.0 rushing yards a game (against FCS Utah Tech, Arizona and Colorado State), has had two weeks to prepare and has two-thirds of the spread bets. The line has moved from 5.5 to 6. TCU is also missing linebacker Michael Short and cornerback Devondre McGee, and edge rusher Zach Chapman is questionable. With Gentry ruled out, what matters is whether the two freshmen hold up as well as BYU's coaches say they will.
If you think TCU wins it outright, the moneyline was +185 consensus as of 6:36 AM ET.
PICK #2: Under 47.5 (-106)
TCU has not scored more than 13 against a Power Four defense, and its three FBS games finished on 25, 38 and 34 total points.
Neither defense has been easy to score on. TCU has allowed six touchdowns in four games and 264.8 yards a game. BYU gave up 7 to Utah Tech, 17 to Arizona and 23 to Colorado State, and 16 of Colorado State's 23 came in the fourth quarter after BYU was up 38-7. BYU's one Power Four game, the 28-17 win over Arizona, totaled 45. The Cougars also run far more than they throw, 117 rushes to 65 passes, which keeps the clock moving, and they'll be doing it with a reshuffled right side of the line.
The total opened at 52.5, before TCU scored 13 at UCF and before Gentry's surgery. The consensus as of 6:36 AM ET is 47.5 at -106, which prices the Under at 51.5%. Some books have 48.5, which is the better Under number, and one deals it at -118.
Five points have already come off this total, so the value is thinner than it was. Don't count on the weather either way. Showers and storms are in Fort Worth this morning. The National Weather Service hourly forecast has them easing to a 16% chance by kickoff, with 76 degrees and a 5 mph north wind, but a second forecast service keeps the rain chance near 70% into the evening. BYU averages 44.0 points, boosted by the 63 against Utah Tech, and its three games totaled 70, 45 and 64. Craig throws for about 303 yards a game, and he got receiver Jordan Dwyer back at UCF, where Dwyer caught five passes for 100 yards. BYU is without safety Raider Damuni, linebacker Siale Esera and cornerback Jonathan Kabeya. A single return or defensive score could flip this.
This bet and TCU +6 lean on the same thing, TCU's defense holding up against BYU's run game, so expect them to win or lose together. For the extra point, Under 48.5 (-118) is the alternative: a 31-17 BYU win goes over 47.5 by half a point but stays under 48.5.
PICK #3: Ed Small 40+ Receiving Yards (+103)
Small, TCU's slot receiver, has topped 40 yards in all four games he's played, including all three against FBS opponents.
His lines: 9 catches for 65 yards against North Carolina, 5 for 101 against FCS Grambling, 7 for 164 against Arkansas State and 3 for 41 at UCF. That's 24 catches for 371 yards on 11, 7, 8 and 5 targets. Jaden Craig throws 29 to 40 passes a game, TCU averages about 303 passing yards, and in the two Power Four losses the Frogs threw 32 and 40 times. Forty yards is the line closest to even money; at 50 yards (+171), Small went over in three of four. BYU allowed 230 passing yards to Arizona (23 of 31) and 220 to Colorado State (25 of 41), with the top receivers in those games posting 48, 48, 85 and 67. BYU played both without safety Raider Damuni, cornerback Jonathan Kabeya hasn't been on the depth chart this season, and both are listed out again.
The receiver room is the catch. Jordan Dwyer missed the first three games and came back at UCF with eight targets and 100 yards. In the one game they've played together, Small had five targets and 41 yards, a single yard over this number, and running back Jeremy Payne caught six passes. Dwyer isn't on this week's report. BYU's run-heavy approach (117 rushes, 65 passes) also cuts down TCU's snaps, and the Cougars held Arizona and Colorado State to 6.25 yards a throw combined. The +103 is a single posted price as of 6:33 AM ET.
Prefer the quarterback? Jaden Craig over 200 passing yards (-184) is the alternative. He's cleared it in three of four games and two of three against FBS teams. Note how this fits with TCU +6: both need TCU's offense moving and its passing game in use. A BYU blowout sinks the side and the Under, but Small can still cash because teams that trail throw. A slow, Payne-heavy TCU win does the opposite, cashing the first two and possibly sinking this one.
