Odds as of Oct 17, 5:54 AM ET

Georgia has won nine straight in the Deep South's Oldest Rivalry. The Bulldogs are 6-0, ranked first in the country and a week removed from a 20-17 win at Alabama. Auburn is 3-2 and rested after a bye, and the last time it took the field it lost 24-14 at Tennessee on Oct 3.

The spread opened at Georgia -16.5 on Oct 4 and has climbed to -19.5, while the total has dropped from 54.5 to 49.5. Put those two moves together and Auburn's implied scoring falls from about 19 points to about 15. That squares with the matchup. Georgia has held its last three opponents to 13, 14 and 17 points, and Auburn has scored 21 or fewer in two of its three SEC games. The Tigers will also be without linebacker Xavier Atkins, their second-leading tackler. Georgia is missing defensive back KJ Bolden, running back Chauncey Bowens and receivers Isiah Canion and Thomas Blackshear, though running back Nate Frazier is expected back from a rib injury.

We see Georgia winning by three scores at home, with whatever Auburn manages coming from its quarterback. Byrum Brown has scored in every game this season. Kickoff in Athens is 3:30 PM ET on ESPN.

Auburn vs. Georgia Predictions

  • Pick #1: Georgia -19.5 (-112)
  • Pick #2: Byrum Brown Anytime Touchdown (+155)

PICK #1: Georgia -19.5 (-112)

Four of Georgia's five wins over FBS teams cleared this number: 70-20 over Western Kentucky, 45-17 at Arkansas, 41-13 over Oklahoma and 38-14 over Vanderbilt. The exception was a three-point win on the road at Alabama. This one is in Athens.

Auburn's offense is why we're comfortable with the number. The Tigers scored 14 at Tennessee on 345 yards and turned it over three times, and they gained 279 yards in a 21-15 win over Vanderbilt. Georgia's defense is better than either of those. Atkins (37 tackles, 7 1/2 for loss) won't be there on the other side of the ball, and the line has already moved three points Georgia's way.

You're paying -112, a 52.8% break-even. Auburn's record is the argument against: it hasn't lost by 20 this year, falling 44-39 to Florida and 24-14 at Tennessee, and three of its five games were one-score finishes. Auburn can score once and Georgia still covers comfortably. It takes a second late touchdown to turn a three-score lead into a loss on the spread.

PICK #2: Byrum Brown Anytime Touchdown (+155)

Brown has found the end zone in all five of Auburn's games. He ran for touchdowns against Baylor, Florida, Vanderbilt and Tennessee and caught one against Southern Miss. He's also the offense's busiest runner: 21 carries against Baylor, 13 against Southern Miss, 18 against Florida, 10 against Vanderbilt and 19 at Tennessee. No Auburn back has carried more than 15 times in a game, so when the Tigers get close, the ball is in his hands.

That matters even more when Auburn is chasing the game. The drives that do reach the red zone are likely to end with Brown keeping it, on a designed run or a scramble. A 35-14 Georgia win pays both picks. At +155 the price implies a 39.2% chance, and he has scored every week.

This is the best defense he'll see. Georgia held Oklahoma to 13, Vanderbilt to 14 and Alabama to 17, so a shutout, or an Auburn touchdown by someone else, beats this bet. He also threw three touchdown passes against Florida, which means some drives end with his arm instead of his legs.
