PICK #1: Auburn -2.5 over Baylor (-110)
Both of these teams enter this contest with high expectations, despite having very different ends to their respective seasons a year ago. Auburn went 5-7 after only winning two of their first seven games a season ago, and junior quarterback Jackson Arnold transferred in from Oklahoma in hopes of a fresh start.
On the other side, Baylor won its last six games to finish with an impressive 8-4 record in what was a hyper-competitive Big 12 Conference. Senior quarterback Sawyer Robertson will lead the Bears offense after throwing for 3071 yards, 28 touchdowns, and only eight interceptions a season ago.
On paper, Baylor has the advantage at the quarterback position, but Auburn may out-talent Baylor in all other areas on this offense. Baylor’s defensive front is smaller than many SEC units, and the Tigers’ offense should be able to lean into their running game to set the tone in Week 1. If Baylor decides to sell out on the run, Auburn has one of the best receivers in the nation, including sophomore star Cam Coleman. If Arnold can prove to be even moderately accurate under center, he has receivers like Coleman who have the ability to win their matchups on most plays. It might not be pretty, but let’s take Auburn to bring this one home.
PICK #2: Under 57.5 (-110)
Week 1 games usually have a bit of a feeling-out process to them, and we can expect the same thing in Friday’s contest. Given the fact that we’re not sure what to expect from the quarterback spot with Auburn, we can expect the Tigers to open their season with a heavy dose of the ground game. With that in mind, Auburn’s offensive line should be able to lean on its running game, especially when trying to get Arnold comfortable in the first half.
Additionally, Auburn’s defense returns plenty from a season ago, and while Baylor’s offense should be solid in Big 12 play, this is a different caliber of defense than what the Bears were used to from last fall. Let’s back the under in Waco.
PICK #3: Cam Coleman (Auburn) anytime touchdown scorer (+100)
Cam Coleman might be the best player on the field on Friday, and we’re getting a bit of value on the Auburn wideout to find the end zone at plus money. Baylor’s defense is a decent unit, but the secondary is clearly the weak point of the team, as the Bears allowed nearly eight yards per attempt and surrendered six more touchdowns through the air than on the ground a season ago. Coleman will likely be the best receiver this Baylor team faces all season and he should be a bit of a security blanket for Arnold in his debut.
