Two 2-2 teams still looking for a first SEC win meet in College Station, and the one laying two touchdowns has the bigger problems. Texas A&M is 0-2 in the league. Kentucky beat the Aggies 31-21 at Kyle Field as a 16.5-point underdog, and then LSU won 35-6 in Baton Rouge, where Marcel Reed completed 10 of 26 passes for 106 yards. Mike Elko isn't changing quarterbacks: "We still believe in him." Reed's leading receiver, Mario Craver, hurt his left ankle at LSU and is questionable. Terry Bussey is out for the season, and linebacker Tamarion Watkins went on the report as out Thursday. Arkansas is 0-1 in the SEC under first-year coach Ryan Silverfield. It lost 43-10 at Utah and 45-17 to Georgia, then beat Tulsa 34-6 as KJ Jackson threw for 309 yards.

The market has drifted a little toward the Razorbacks. Texas A&M opened -14.5 and sits at -14 on the consensus line, and the total has slipped from 51.5 to 50.5. Kickoff is Saturday at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN2 at Kyle Field.

Arkansas vs. Texas A&M Predictions

  • Pick #1: Arkansas +14 (-112)
  • Pick #2: Under 50.5 (-112)
  • Pick #3: Chris Marshall Anytime Touchdown (+145)

PICK #1: Arkansas +14 (-112)

Laying 14 with an 0-2 SEC team whose offense has 27 points in two league games is asking a lot.

A 14-point spread with a 50.5 total puts the Aggies near 32. Against Kentucky and LSU, Reed went 36 of 75 for 342 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions. The offense managed 197 yards at LSU. He's been sacked nine times this season, five of them in Baton Rouge, and the staff has moved right tackle Wilkin Formby to guard to try to fix the protection. That 31.3-point season average is propped up by the first two weeks: 50 against Missouri State and 48 against Arizona State, with 14 of those points coming on interception returns.

The A&M defense hasn't held up its end lately either. Kentucky and LSU completed 31 of 46 passes for 564 yards and four touchdowns against it, and the Aggies have four sacks in four games. Arkansas throws for 275.8 yards a game with Jackson starting every one of them. The Razorbacks should move the ball and put up some points.

I'm not pretending Arkansas is good. It lost its two games against Power Four teams by 33 and 28, one of them its only road game, and its wins came against an FCS team and Tulsa. It runs for 2.6 yards a carry, has allowed 13 sacks and has given up touchdowns on 14 of 16 red-zone trips. The run defense is the weak spot: opponents average 124.8 yards at 4.2 a carry with 11 rushing touchdowns, so Texas A&M can score without asking Reed to throw. Defensive lineman Steven Soles Jr. is questionable. Texas A&M also covered as a 14.5-point favorite in a 48-20 win over Arizona State and has won 13 of the last 14 in the series, and 72% of spread bets are on the Aggies. A healthy Craver changes the passing game too. At -112 (the consensus price as of 4:54 AM ET), the break-even is 52.8%.

Arkansas Moneyline (+450) is there if you want the outright upset. Just know this pick and the Under need the same thing, an A&M offense that stays stuck, so one clean night from Reed hurts both.

PICK #2: Under 50.5 (-112)

Neither offense has shown it can carry half of a 50-point game against a major-conference defense.

Texas A&M's last two games totaled 52 and 41, and the Aggies supplied 21 and 6 of those points. They average 5.6 yards per pass attempt, Bussey is gone, and Craver is questionable. Arkansas scored 10 at Utah and 17 against Georgia, and seven of the 17 came in the final minute. This Arkansas offense can move it through the air against a secondary that's been beaten there, but it stalls near the goal line: 10 touchdowns and seven field goals on 18 red-zone trips, and just 358 rushing yards in four games. The Aggies have allowed only 11 conversions on 43 third downs. That's the path to Arkansas staying within 14 without the game getting over 50.5.

Weather could chip in early. The latest National Weather Service hourly for College Station shows about 80 degrees at the 6 p.m. local kickoff, a 34% chance of showers and thunderstorms, and a north wind around 11 mph gusting near 20. The rain chance drops to 15% an hour later and to around 10% after that, and a local station mentions a possible passing shower or lightning delay around kickoff. Call it a chance of a wet start, not a rain game.

There's an Over case and it isn't flimsy. Texas A&M gave up 31 and 35 in its SEC games, and Arkansas allowed 43 to Utah and 45 to Georgia. Opponents have scored touchdowns on 14 of 16 trips inside the Arkansas 20, and 11 of the 15 touchdowns Arkansas has allowed came on the ground. The Aggies' games have totaled 50, 68, 52 and 41 points, Arkansas's 45, 53, 62 and 40. Turnovers can wreck an Under by themselves, and the Aggies have thrown five interceptions. Last season's meeting finished 45-42, though with a different Arkansas staff and quarterback. It's also the crowded side, with 77% of total bets on the Under. The consensus price as of 4:54 AM ET is -112, an implied 52.8%.

If you think both defenses keep leaking, the Over at 50.5 (-108) is the flip. This pick and Arkansas +14 share a premise. A 38-17 Texas A&M win sinks both; a 27-10 Aggies win cashes the Under and loses the points.

PICK #3: Chris Marshall Anytime Touchdown (+145)

Arkansas' leading receiver gets the part of this Texas A&M defense that's been burned the most.

The Aggies have allowed two touchdown passes in each of their three games against FBS opponents, and four of those six went for 21 yards or more: 21 and 58 to Arizona State, 42 to Kentucky, 57 to LSU. In two of those games the other team's top receiver scored twice. Arizona State's Reed Harris caught 9 passes for 189 yards, and LSU's Jackson Harris had 6 for 163. Asked after LSU whether the secondary's play surprised him, Elko said, "Clearly I'm surprised." The pass rush hasn't helped, with four sacks all season, and Jackson throws it 33 times a game.

Marshall is where those throws go. He has 28 catches for 473 yards, 28 of the Razorbacks' 99 completions, and he's led Arkansas in receiving yards in every game. Game by game: 7 for 79 against North Alabama, 5 for 63 at Utah, 7 for 136 against Georgia and 9 for 195 with a 20-yard touchdown against Tulsa. His two best games are his last two, and one came against Georgia. Nobody on the availability report changes who gets the ball, either. Tight end Maddox Lassiter, who has no catches this season, is the only Arkansas offensive player ruled out.

He has scored in just one of four games, though. Five of Arkansas' six touchdown passes went to someone else, three of them to tight ends from 10 yards or closer. Jackson ran in two scores himself against Tulsa, and the offense has kicked seven field goals. At +145 as of 6:21 AM ET, the price says 40.8%, and that's about right, not generous.

KJ Jackson at +200 is the play for anyone who would sooner bet on the quarterback's legs near the goal line. One score cashes all three picks: Texas A&M 27, Arkansas 20, with Marshall catching one of the two Arkansas touchdowns. That covers the 14 and stays under 50.5. If Arkansas reaches 30, the Under is in trouble, and if Texas A&M reaches 35, the points probably go with it.
