Odds as of Oct 17, 6:46 AM ET

Texas Tech is 5-0, rested after a bye, and a 15.5-point favorite over 3-2 Arizona State. The line opened at 12.5 and has moved three points toward the Red Raiders, with the total at 50.5. Nobody runs on this Tech defense. Opponents average 91.4 rushing yards, and the Red Raiders allow 16.2 points a game. They can be thrown on, though: 262.2 passing yards a game, including 417 to Oregon State and 297 to Colorado.

So Arizona State will have to throw. The Sun Devils lost 55-19 at home to Baylor two weeks ago and 48-20 at Texas A&M in September, and a big underdog in Lubbock isn't going to run its way back into a game. When Cutter Boley throws, he looks for Reed Harris, who has led the team in receiving yards in every game. Both bets ride on him: Tech can win comfortably and Arizona State's top receiver can still pile up yards and a score.

Texas Tech is without running back Cameron Dickey (ankle). Will Hammond starts at quarterback, and Thomas Castellanos, eligible again after a court injunction on Friday, is available for short-yardage and goal-line snaps. Omarion Miller is probable for Arizona State. The game starts at 3:30 PM ET on FOX, under a sunny Lubbock sky with almost no wind.

Arizona State vs. Texas Tech Predictions

  • Pick #1: Reed Harris 75+ Receiving Yards (-120)
  • Pick #2: Reed Harris Anytime Touchdown (+125)

PICK #1: Reed Harris 75+ Receiving Yards (-120)

The only time Harris missed this number, Arizona State barely threw. That was the 24-17 win at Kansas, when the Sun Devils ran 43 times, Boley finished with 95 passing yards and Harris had 48. Every other game cleared 75: 137 against Morgan State, 189 at Texas A&M, 125 against Baylor and 91 on eight catches against Hawaii. Four of five is a lot better than the 54.5% that -120 implies.

A run-heavy afternoon is about the last thing Arizona State gets against this front. In its two lopsided losses, at A&M and against Baylor, Harris went for 189 and 125.

PICK #2: Reed Harris Anytime Touchdown (+125)

Tech's defense gives up touchdowns one way. Opponents have thrown nine touchdown passes against it (three each by Oregon State and Houston, two by Sam Houston, one by Colorado) and haven't run for a single score. That suits Arizona State's top target.

Harris has scored in four of five games, all on Boley passes: two against Morgan State, two at Texas A&M, one at Kansas and two against Hawaii. He caught seven of Boley's 12 touchdown passes and was blanked only against Baylor, despite 125 yards. A defense allowing 16.2 points a game won't hand the Sun Devils many red-zone trips, and that's how this one loses. When they do get close, Boley has gone to Harris more than anyone else. Plus money at +125 implies 44.4%, well short of how often he has found the end zone.
