The Wild (10-3-3) visit the Flyers (4-8-4) at Xfinity Mobile Arena for a 7:00 PM ET puck drop. Our read is simple: Minnesota is the much better team, and when it wins, it usually wins by more than one. The Wild outshoot opponents 30.8 to 25.3 a game and allow 2.25 goals, one of the three lowest marks in the league. Philadelphia gets outshot 29.8 to 23.3 and scores 2.19 goals a game, the fewest in the NHL. The goal differentials are +16 and -18.

Jesper Wallstedt is Minnesota's projected starter. Philadelphia hasn't named its goalie. Dan Vladar is projected after coach Rick Tocchet hinted at giving him a second straight start, and Joseph Woll is the other option. The Flyers do have Travis Konecny and Owen Tippett back, and that's the main risk to both picks.

Wild vs. Flyers Predictions

  • Pick #1: Wild Moneyline (-175)
  • Pick #2: Wild -1.5 (+145)

PICK #1: Wild Moneyline (-175)

Minnesota has lost by more than one goal once all season, 5-2 at Winnipeg, and has gone 6-1-2 since. It's 4-0-1 in its last five, capped by a 5-1 win in Washington in its last game. Wallstedt, projected again, is 9-2-3 with a 2.06 goals-against average.

The price is what gives us pause. At -175 you're paying for a 63.6% chance, which is close to fair rather than a gift. What justifies it is the shot gap. The Wild take about seven and a half more shots a game than the Flyers, and the Flyers give up about four and a half more than the Wild. Philadelphia's goalies haven't been the problem; the volume in front of them has. The betting is lopsided as well, with 94% of moneyline bets and 99% of the money on Minnesota.

These aren't the Flyers who started 0-6-3, though. They're 4-2-1 in their last seven and put six on Utah in a 6-3 win with Konecny back from a 10-game absence. They also beat Minnesota twice last season, once in overtime and once in a shootout. The Wild are still missing Brock Faber, Jared Spurgeon, Filip Gustavsson and both Folignos, but none of them was in the lineup for the win in Washington either.

PICK #2: Wild -1.5 (+145)

Same game, bigger payout, built on how Minnesota wins. Eight of its 10 wins came by two goals or more, and so did all six on the road: 3-1 in Nashville, 4-1 in Florida, 5-1 in Seattle, 4-2 in Vancouver, 3-1 in Utah and 5-1 in Washington. That's 6 covers in 11 road games, and +145 implies only 40.8%.

Philadelphia's habit of keeping games close is the danger. Seven of its 12 losses came by one goal, four of them past regulation, so a one-goal game is a real outcome, and it sinks this one. If Wallstedt doesn't start, both picks lose some footing.
