UMass vs. UConn Prediction, CFB Week 8 Odds & Best Bets (10/23)

Fact checked at 10:02 AM ET, Oct 23, 2026
Odds as of Oct 23, 10:01 AM ET
UMass (4-3) won its first four games with William "Pop" Watson III at quarterback, including a 37-21 win at Rutgers, and has lost three straight in MAC play since. Watson hasn't played since a 38-14 home loss to Eastern Michigan on Oct. 3 because of an ankle injury, and coach Joe Harasymiak has called him a game-time decision. Without him, UMass lost 20-19 to Miami (Ohio) and 25-18 in overtime at Buffalo, where Logan Inagawa made his first start. UConn (3-3) is coming off a bye week and a 34-20 win at Temple on Oct. 10, when it piled up 505 yards.
UConn is a 14.5-point favorite and the total is 50.5. Kickoff is Friday at 7:00 PM ET at Pratt & Whitney Stadium in East Hartford, and the forecast calls for a clear sky, temperatures around 50 degrees and a light north wind.
UConn is the better team and should win. UMass, though, has a defense that has allowed more than 25 points once in seven games, and with its starter hurt the offense has turned into a run-first operation. We expect a slower, lower-scoring game than the total suggests, with UConn winning by less than two touchdowns. Both picks cash in that game.
UMass vs. UConn Predictions
- Pick #1: Under 50.5 (-112)
- Pick #2: UMass +14.5 (-110)
PICK #1: Under 50.5 (-112)
UMass games rarely get to 50.5. Only two of its seven have: the 37-21 win at Rutgers (58 points) and the Eastern Michigan loss (52). The two games without Watson finished with 39 and 43, and Buffalo was tied 18-18 at the end of regulation. UMass played that game in two- and three-tight-end sets, leaning on the run to protect its quarterback, and finished with 47 carries for 171 yards. Inagawa ran 19 times himself and threw for 168 yards on 25 attempts. On the other side of the ball, Eastern Michigan's 38 is the only time an opponent has scored more than 25 against the Minutemen this season.
The worry is UConn. Four of its five games against FBS opponents went over 50.5. The offense averages 31.6 points per game against FBS teams, and the defense has given up at least 289 passing yards to all five of them. A healthy Watson would also raise UMass's ceiling. And the market has gone the other way: the total sat at 47.5 to 48.5 early in the week and has climbed to 50.5, with 81% of bets and 84% of the money on the Over. We're going against the crowd at -112, which implies a 52.8% chance.
PICK #2: UMass +14.5 (-110)
UConn has been favored against one FBS opponent all season, at Southern Miss, and that 48-20 win is the only one of its five FBS games it won by more than 14 points. It lost 38-14 to Maryland, 24-21 at Miami (Ohio) and 42-41 in overtime to Syracuse, and it beat Temple 34-20.
Miami (Ohio) is the common opponent. UMass lost to the RedHawks by one point at home with a backup quarterback, and UConn lost to them by three on the road. UMass's two losses without Watson came by one point and by seven in overtime, and the spread has already come down from 16 or more early in the week. The lower the score, the harder a 15-point margin is to reach.
The -110 price implies 52.4%. UConn's running game could break this open. It put up 248 yards at Temple, with Trey Cornist going for 114 on seven carries and Cyncir Bowers adding 84. If UMass falls behind early, a run-first team with a backup quarterback isn't built to come back, and Eastern Michigan beat UMass by 24 with Watson on the field.
