Portland (5-1) visits Phoenix (1-4) at Mortgage Matchup Center for a 9:00 PM ET tip, and we think this one comes down to a single question: can Phoenix stop anybody? So far, no. The Blazers average 120.2 points a game, fourth in the league. The Suns allow 122.8, 26th, and nobody has scored fewer than 116 against them. We're riding Portland's offense through its team total and through Deni Avdija, who has done most of the scoring.

Portland is still without Ja Morant (left hamstring strain) and Shaedon Sharpe (knee surgery). Scoot Henderson has started both games since Morant went down, and the Blazers won both, 112-90 at Utah and 118-110 at Denver. Phoenix has Mark Williams out, with Jordan Goodwin and Rasheer Fleming questionable. Starting lineups are projected.

Trail Blazers vs. Suns Predictions

  • Pick #1: Trail Blazers Team Total Over 115.5 (-105)
  • Pick #2: Deni Avdija Over 23.5 Points (-120)

PICK #1: Trail Blazers Team Total Over 115.5 (-105)

Look at what Phoenix has given up: 124, 125, 127, 122 and 116. Portland has put up 124, 128, 136, 103, 112 and 118, clearing this number four times in six games, and three of its four road games went over. The first meeting was a 124-83 Portland win.

The Suns' starting five has stayed the same, and so have the results. With Williams out, the frontcourt is thin, and Goodwin, a regular reserve, sat the second half of the loss at Golden State with a calf problem. The -105 price implies a 51.2% chance, and we rate Portland's odds higher against this defense.

The worry is Portland's backcourt without Morant. The two games since he got hurt produced 112 and 118, one under and one over, and at least one projection model has Portland around 112 tonight. We're siding with the defense that hasn't held a team under 116.

PICK #2: Deni Avdija Over 23.5 Points (-120)

Avdija has scored 26, 23, 24, 24 and 28 in his last five, all starts, at 30 to 38 minutes a night. That's four of five over the line, and the miss was 23. Losing Morant has only pushed more of the offense his way: 24 at Utah, then 28 at Denver with nine in the fourth quarter.

This isn't a hot streak on its own. Last season he cleared 23.5 in 38 of 68 games, about 56%, and he now plays with less backcourt scoring around him. The -120 price implies 54.5%. If Portland is going to score big in Phoenix, he's the one most likely to do it.

The real danger is another rout. He played only 23 minutes in the 41-point opener and finished with 18. His minutes also assume he starts as projected.
