Spurs vs Thunder NBA Playoffs Western Conference Finals Game 2 Picks

The Western Conference Finals continue tonight at the Paycom Center as the Oklahoma City Thunder look to even the series following a heart-pounding 122-115 double-overtime loss to the San Antonio Spurs. This matchup features two 62-win juggernauts — the first time two teams with such records have met in the playoffs since the 1998 NBA Finals between the Chicago Bulls and Utah Jazz. 

Game 1 was an absolute statement for the Spurs, who have now won five of six meetings against OKC this year. San Antonio carried their regular-season dominance into the postseason opener despite finishing a grueling six-game series against the Minnesota Timberwolves just days prior. 

On the flip side, the Thunder entered completely fresh after a week of rest following a sweep of the Los Angeles Lakers, only to have their perfect postseason shattered. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:30 PM ET as Oklahoma City tries to defend home court and avoid a 2-0 deficit before the series shifts to San Antonio.

Spurs vs Thunder Predictions

PICK #1: Thunder -6.5 (-110) 

The Spurs successfully stole home-court advantage, but they did so at an incredibly high physical cost. Victor Wembanyama played a career-high 49 minutes to secure the victory and looked visibly gassed during late stretches. With All-Star point guard De’Aaron Fox absent in Game 1 due to a lingering ankle injury, the Spurs will likely remain ultra-cautious and lean on rookie Dylan Harper again rather than risking Fox's long-term health.

While Harper was spectacular with a 24-point double-double, replicating that production against a furious, adjustments-focused Thunder squad is a massive ask. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander received his second consecutive MVP award right before tip-off, only to post a team-worst -15 rating while shooting an uncharacteristic 7-of-23 from the floor. A massive bounce-back from the MVP is a statistical certainty. 

Oklahoma City showed lethal execution in the fourth quarter to erase a 10-point deficit, and that clutch execution will carry over. Expect a fully focused Thunder team to pull away late, course-correcting with a comfortable cover to knot the series at 1-1.

PICK #2: Under 215.5 (-110) 

Do not let the double-overtime score of 122-115 fool you, as this is fundamentally an elite defensive series. The Under 219.5 line in Game 1 would have comfortably cashed in regulation, and the total amazingly survived through the first overtime period before finally breaking in the second extra session. The oddsmakers have adjusted the line downward to 215.5 for Game 2, which is still too high for the sheer quality of these defensive units. San Antonio currently owns the number-one defensive rating in the playoffs, while the Thunder led the regular season in defensive rating by a wide margin.

Stylistically, neither team gives its opponent easy points; both squads rank at the top of the league in limiting opponent free-throw attempts. Fewer whistles mean fewer points scored with the clock stopped. During Game 1, the Thunder found it impossible to drive the lane with Wembanyama permanently patrolling the paint, forcing them into kick-outs and low-efficiency perimeter looks. 

With tired legs on one side and defensive versatility on both, this game will settle into a gritty, half-court battle that stays well under the total.

PICK #3: Victor Wembanyama Under 24.5 Points (-110)

Wembanyama went completely nuclear in the opener, dropping 41 points and 24 rebounds to join an elite Hall of Fame list as the youngest player to ever post a 40-20 playoff game. However, banking on a repeat performance after playing nearly 50 minutes on Monday is highly risky.

The Thunder will pivot their entire defensive scheme to force Wembanyama into a playmaker role, taking away his interior looks and forcing him to kick the ball out to perimeter shooters. Chet Holmgren, who was held to just eight points on 2-of-7 shooting, will be highly motivated to alter shots and crowd Wembanyama. Because San Antonio already accomplished their main goal of stealing a road game, head coach Mitch Johnson can afford to manage Wembanyama’s usage carefully to prevent burnout. 

Expect Wembanyama to still impact the game defensively, but finish with a much more modest scoring total.
