Odds as of Oct 19, 5:24 AM ET

Toronto has dropped three straight, and the last two came at home. The Maple Leafs (3-4-2) lost 5-4 at Utah, 5-4 in overtime to Buffalo and 4-1 to the Islanders on Saturday, a game they played without John Tavares, who is out week to week with a lower-body injury. San Jose (4-3-1) comes in off a shootout loss in Detroit on Saturday. Macklin Celebrini has 11 points in his six games this season after missing two games earlier this month with a lower-body injury.

Toronto still puts up 3.22 goals a game, though, and both of these teams sit in the bottom third of the league in goals allowed per game. San Jose is 24th in scoring, and what offense it has comes from Celebrini's line and the power play rather than the bottom of the lineup. We expect Toronto's second line to keep producing at home while the Sharks' third line spends its shifts chasing the puck, and both picks below cash in that game.

Toronto is a -143 favorite with the total at 6.5. Puck drop is Monday at 7:30 PM ET at Scotiabank Arena, on TVAS, SN+ and NBCSCA.

Sharks vs. Maple Leafs Predictions

  • Pick #1: Easton Cowan Over 0.5 Points (+110)
  • Pick #2: Kiefer Sherwood Under 1.5 Shots on Goal (-110)

PICK #1: Easton Cowan Over 0.5 Points (+110)

Cowan has an assist in each of the last two games, against Buffalo and the Islanders, playing nearly 17 and nearly 15 minutes. That makes 6 of 9 games with a point this season (three goals, four assists), including two points against the Islanders on Sept. 30. The goals are there too: on the road trip before this homestand he scored at Vegas, where he put four shots on goal, and again at Colorado.

The injuries haven't cost him his spot. He stayed on the left side of the second line on Saturday with Nick Paul and Kirill Marchenko, and he plays on the second power-play unit. Marchenko has a point in 7 of his 9 games, with a hat trick against Buffalo on Thursday, so Cowan is skating next to a winger who keeps finding the scoresheet. With Tavares out, Toronto has fewer proven forwards to share the scoring, and Cowan is still in the top six.

At +110, the price implies a 47.6% chance, which is less than his rate so far. What could go wrong: these are middle-six minutes, he went pointless against Ottawa, Nashville and Utah, and Toronto managed one goal on Saturday. Alex Nedeljkovic has also started San Jose's last two games and is 2-0-1 with a .920 save percentage.

PICK #2: Kiefer Sherwood Under 1.5 Shots on Goal (-110)

Sherwood doesn't shoot much, and his role has shrunk. He has 11 shots in eight games and has finished with one or none in six of them. At -110, the break-even is 52.4%. San Jose moved him down to the third line on October 13, with Ivar Stenberg and Michael Misa. Since then he has one shot against Boston, five at Nashville and none in under 13 minutes at Detroit on Saturday. He scored his only goal on two shots against Los Angeles on October 3 and has one assist since.

He isn't on either power-play unit; those run through Celebrini, Will Smith, Tyler Toffoli and Mason Marchment. And the extra minutes didn't help when he had them. Back on the second line before October 13, he put one shot on goal in almost 18 minutes at St. Louis and none in just over 16 minutes against Edmonton. If Toronto's second line wins its shifts, the Sharks' depth forwards will spend even more of the night in their own end.

Nashville is the warning: he played more than 19 minutes that night and turned it into five shots, so a line shuffle or a Sharks team chasing the game could push him over.
