Odds as of Oct 12, 8:11 AM ET

Ottawa comes to Newark at 4-1-0, and Linus Ullmark deserves most of the credit. He is 4-0-0 with a 1.34 goals-against average and a .942 save percentage, and the Senators have allowed 11 goals in five games. New Jersey is 2-2-0 after beating Vancouver 4-1 on Saturday, a night its power play scored three times and it outshot the Canucks 37-21.

Heavy shot volume is how the Devils play. They average 37.75 shots per game, the most in the league. Ottawa averages 24.8 and has scored on 12.5% of its power plays. Expect New Jersey to have the puck for long stretches in its own building, with Ottawa leaning on Ullmark and its top line. Both picks come from that game.

New Jersey is the home favorite at -135, with Ottawa at +110 (it opened +115). The Devils are +182 on the -1.5 puck line, and the total is 6 (Over -115, Under -105), up from 5.5 at the open, with 91% of the bets on the Over.

Neither goalie is confirmed. Ullmark is expected for Ottawa and Jake Allen for New Jersey, but both clubs play again Tuesday (the Devils at Detroit, the Senators at home against St. Louis), so either could give the net to a backup. Jake Sanderson is day-to-day for Ottawa and not in the projected defense pairs. Connor Brown is listed out for New Jersey.

Puck drop is Monday, October 12, at 7:00 PM ET at Prudential Center in Newark, on MSGSN and NHL Network.

Senators vs. Devils Predictions

  • Pick #1: Timo Meier Over 2.5 Shots on Goal (-155)
  • Pick #2: Dylan Cozens Under 0.5 Points (-130)

PICK #1: Timo Meier Over 2.5 Shots on Goal (-155)

Meier has not had a game under four shots. He opened with 4 against Philadelphia, then put up 6 against the Islanders, 8 against Utah and 4 against Vancouver, which is 22 of the Devils' shots in four games. He skates 16:41 to 19:57 a night on the second line with Nico Hischier and Luke Evangelista and gets second power-play unit time. He has one point to show for all that volume, which suits us fine, since we only need the shots.

The price implies 60.8%, and for a player who has cleared three by at least a shot every night, that's fair to cheap. The worries are minutes and one big game: he played 16:53 on Saturday, and the eight-shot night against Utah inflates his average.

PICK #2: Dylan Cozens Under 0.5 Points (-130)

When New Jersey has the puck, Ottawa's second wave doesn't get much, and Cozens has been quiet even on nights Ottawa scored. He has one point in five games, a power-play assist against Nashville on Saturday, while playing between 16:17 and 21:29. He centers Ridly Greig and Fabian Zetterlund. Ottawa's offense goes through Tim Stützle (eight points) and Drake Batherson (four), and its four wins came 3-2, 4-1, 2-1 and 3-2 in a shootout.

At -130 (56.5% implied, with the Over at -105), the danger is the power play. Cozens is on Ottawa's first unit, and New Jersey has killed only 63.6% of its penalties in four games, 29th in the league, so a parade of Devils penalties is how he picks up an assist. That risk grows if Nico Daws (0-1-0) starts instead of Allen. Both bets want the same night: New Jersey carrying the play and Ottawa chasing it.
