The Raptors (3-2) visit the Lakers (4-2) at crypto.com Arena for a 9:00 PM ET tip on League Pass and local TV, with Los Angeles favored by 4.5 and the total at 227.5. Kawhi Leonard misses a fourth straight game with swelling in his left knee and is expected to be out for weeks. We expect Toronto to play the way it has without him: Immanuel Quickley sets up Scottie Barnes and RJ Barrett at the rim, and the bigs chase misses against the team that ranks last in the league in rebounds. In that game Quickley gets his assists, and the Lakers' rebounds go to their bigs instead of Matisse Thybulle. Those are the two bets.

Both teams lost their last game. Orlando beat Toronto 121-114 despite 41 points from Barnes, and the Lakers blew a 25-point lead in a 112-95 loss at Golden State. Ziaire Williams is questionable for the Lakers and Adou Thiero is out, while Nate Bittle is out for Toronto. Five and six games are small samples, so read every number below with that in mind.

Raptors vs. Lakers Predictions

  • Pick #1: Immanuel Quickley Over 5.5 Assists (-131)
  • Pick #2: Matisse Thybulle Under 2.5 Rebounds (-173)

PICK #1: Immanuel Quickley Over 5.5 Assists (-131)

Toronto has scored at least 48 points in the paint in all five games and averages 51.6, and Quickley is the starter getting the ball to the people scoring them. His assists, newest first, are 8, 7, 2, 6 and 7, four of five over this line. Against Orlando he played 37 minutes and made sure Barnes got post touches when a smaller defender was on him. Barnes shot 19-of-34 that night.

The price implies 56.7%, and his longer record sits just above it: six or more assists in 41 of 70 games last season, or 58.6%. We'll take the extra from this role, with Leonard's touches gone and two scorers attacking inside. The Lakers also hand out extra possessions. They've had 20 or more turnovers in three of six games and average 17.8, and Toronto's 12.4 steals a game rank second in the league.

The 2 came in a 117-94 loss at Minnesota, when Barnes went 0-of-12, and another game like that loses this bet. Walker Kessler blocks 2.8 shots a game, and a pass to the rim doesn't count if he gets there first. Jamal Shead also had seven and eight assists off the bench in the last two games, in 23 minutes each.

PICK #2: Matisse Thybulle Under 2.5 Rebounds (-173)

Over his last five games, 25 of Thybulle's 33 shots have been threes, and a player spotting up that far from the rim doesn't see many rebounds. He has 3, 1, 2, 1, 1 and 3 this season, newest first, in 22 to 28 minutes a night, so he's stayed under in four of six.

At -173 you're paying for 63.4%, which is steep, and his longer record only just clears it: under in 20 of 30 games last season at 16 minutes a night, and 43 of 65 in 2023-24 at about 23, for 66.3% combined. Only three of his six games with 20 or more minutes last season stayed under, which is the number that worries us.

We land on the Under because of who else is on the floor. The Lakers rank last in the league at 39.2 rebounds a game. Kessler averages 9.0, Luka Doncic had between five and eight in his last four games, and Sandro Mamukelashvili has had as many as eight off the bench. When the Lakers grabbed 48 at the Clippers, Thybulle had one. Toronto averages 14.4 offensive rebounds through five games, fourth in the league, and every shot it makes inside is one less rebound to go around.

Williams's status doesn't change much, since Thybulle had 1, 1 and 2 with him in the lineup and 1 and 3 without him. If Toronto starts missing from outside (it shoots 32.1% from three), long rebounds can find him, and a projected lineup lists him at power forward, closer to the glass. Rookie Cameron Carr is cleared to debut, which could trim his minutes. Thybulle isn't on the injury report.
