Odds as of Oct 15, 8:07 AM ET

The Rangers cross the river at 6-2, unbeaten in five games at Madison Square Garden and 1-2 on the road. They have allowed 1.75 goals a game, second-fewest in the league, but now they have to keep doing it without Igor Shesterkin, who is out for the season with a lower-body injury from the Oct. 9 loss at Washington. Dylan Garand has filled in at 3-1 with a 1.15 goals-against average and a .951 save percentage in four games. The Devils are 3-3 and coming off a 5-4 overtime win at Detroit on Tuesday.

Look at the shots and the matchup flips. New Jersey leads the league with 36.3 shots a game, allows 26.0 and outshoots opponents by about 10 a night, yet it has scored on just 7.3% of its shots. The Rangers take 23.3 a game, sixth-fewest in the league, and have finished 14.5% of them. The market has noticed: the consensus moneyline opened around Rangers -100 and Devils -120 and is now Devils -142, Rangers +120, even with 91% of the moneyline money on New York.

Garand and Jake Allen (3-1, 2.98, .885) are the expected starters. Puck drop is 7:00 PM ET at Prudential Center, on MSG and MSG Sportsnet 2. Our read is that New Jersey keeps the puck at home and the Rangers' finishing comes back to earth, and both bets are built on it.

Rangers vs. Devils Predictions

  • Pick #1: Dougie Hamilton Over 2.5 Shots on Goal (+120)
  • Pick #2: Devils Moneyline (-142)

PICK #1: Dougie Hamilton Over 2.5 Shots on Goal (+120)

Hamilton has 20 shots in six games and has hit three or more in four of them, going 6, 3, 1, 2, 3 and 5 in order. He logs 19 to 23 minutes a night on the second pair with Jonas Siegenthaler and plays on the second power-play unit.

Last season backs it up. He put 203 shots on goal in 77 games and reached three in 42 of those 77. A +120 price works out to 45.5%, which is lower than his hit rate in either season.

New York does keep shots down, allowing 24.0 a game, sixth-fewest in the league. That hasn't stopped this Devils team, which put 33 on Utah, a club that allows the second-fewest.

PICK #2: Devils Moneyline (-142)

The Rangers' 6-2 start leans on two numbers that rarely last: 14.5% shooting on a low shot count and a .951 save percentage from a goalie four games into a starting job. New Jersey's 7.3% shooting should climb, and the Devils have controlled far more of the shots this season. The price has moved toward the Devils even with the public on New York, and the Rangers are 1-2 away from the Garden.

At -142 the Devils need to win 58.7% of the time, and a team that outshoots opponents by 10 a night, playing at home, should clear that. The holes are still worth knowing. Allen's .885 is ordinary, New Jersey's penalty kill is 27th at 70.6% against a Rangers power play running at 21.7%, and Alexis Lafreniere has seven goals during a five-game point streak. If Garand keeps stopping 95% of what he faces, New York can steal this one.
