Rangers vs. Capitals Prediction, NHL Odds & Best Bets (10/9)

Fact checked at 8:45 AM ET, Oct 9, 2026
Odds as of Oct 9, 7:48 AM ET
The Rangers bring a four-game winning streak to Washington, and how they built it is the whole story here. New York is 4-1 and has given up eight goals in five games, 1.6 a night, fewer than anyone in the league except Dallas. Two goals or fewer in four straight. No first-period goal allowed all season. Fourteen of 16 penalties killed. Igor Shesterkin has stopped 88 of 95 shots in four starts, a .926 save percentage, and the one night he sat, Dylan Garand made 22 saves for a shutout in Detroit.
Washington is 2-1 after a 5-3 win over Pittsburgh in Wednesday's home opener, but look past the score and the shot counts run the wrong way: 25 shots a game taken, 31 allowed. The Pierre-Luc Dubois line, with Alex Tuch and Tom Wilson, owns 11 of the team's points. Alex Ovechkin, who has said this is his final season, has one point, an assist in the opener, and three shots in three games from the second line.
The market still leans Washington. The consensus moneyline is Capitals -144, Rangers +120, and the price has moved toward the Capitals since it opened earlier in the week. Most of the moneyline money is on New York even though more of the tickets are on Washington. The puck line is 1.5, Rangers +1.5 at -227 and Capitals -1.5 at +182. The total is 5.5, Over -124 and Under +104.
We see a Rangers team that controls this game, with its top unit doing the scoring at one end and Washington's offense staying thin at the other. A 3-1 or 4-2 Rangers win cashes everything below.
Puck drop is 7:00 PM ET at Capital One Arena, on NHL Network, MSG and Monumental Sports Network. Shesterkin and Logan Thompson are the projected starters; neither club has confirmed its goalie. On the Washington blue line, Matt Roy (lower body) is day to day after sitting out Wednesday and Rasmus Sandin is out following knee surgery, so Dylan McIlrath played in his place on Wednesday.
Rangers vs. Capitals Predictions
- Pick #1: Adam Fox Over 0.5 Assists (-110)
- Pick #2: Alex Ovechkin Under 0.5 Points (-120)
- Pick #3: Gabe Perreault Over 0.5 Points (+150)
PICK #1: Adam Fox Over 0.5 Assists (-110)
Four straight games with an assist, five on the season, and the only blank came in the 3-0 loss in Boston when nobody on the Rangers scored. Two against Tampa Bay, one of them on the power play, then one each at Detroit, against Utah and against the Islanders on Tuesday. Fox plays about 21 minutes a night on the top pair with Vladislav Gavrikov and runs the first power-play unit with Alexis Lafrenière, J.T. Miller, Pavel Dorofeyev and Mika Zibanejad. With 16 Rangers goals in five games, there has been plenty to set up.
Washington is a good team to do it against. The Capitals have allowed 31 shots a game, more than they have taken, and their blue line is thin with Roy day to day and Sandin out, which put McIlrath in the lineup on Wednesday.
At -110 the price works out to 52.4%, against a record of an assist in four of five games in exactly this role. What could go wrong: Washington's penalty kill has stopped 11 of 12, Thompson has a .921 save percentage in two starts, and a 2-1 Rangers win can leave Fox off the sheet. If you are tempted by the points Over at -140, remember it only adds the goal, and Fox has not scored. The assists line is the better price.
PICK #2: Alex Ovechkin Under 0.5 Points (-120)
Ovechkin is playing between 12 and 14 minutes a night this season, on the second line with Dylan Strome and Anthony Beauvillier, and the numbers look like it. His only point was an assist in the opener at Carolina. He went pointless at Tampa Bay and against Pittsburgh, and he has three shots on goal across the three games. Washington's offense has run through the Dubois line, not his.
Now put him up against the Rangers: 1.6 goals allowed a game, second-fewest in the league, two or fewer in each of the last four, no first-period goal all season, a penalty kill at 14 of 16 and Shesterkin at .926. A quiet night is the likelier outcome, and -120 implies 54.5%, which is a fair ask.
It is not free money. Ovechkin sits on the first power-play unit with Wilson, Strome, Dubois and Jakob Chychrun, he logged more than five minutes on the power play against Pittsburgh, and one power-play goal from that group puts a point on his line. Washington's power play is 2 for 8. The Capitals have scored five goals in two of three games, and nights like that spread points through the lineup. And if Garand starts instead of Shesterkin, part of this case goes with him. For anyone who would rather stay off the points market, Ovechkin Under 2.5 Shots on Goal (-110) plays the same idea; he has one, zero and two shots so far.
PICK #3: Gabe Perreault Over 0.5 Points (+150)
Start with the price. Plus money, a 40.0% implied chance, for a first-line winger with a point in four of five games. Perreault scored against Tampa Bay, set up a power-play goal at Detroit, scored against Utah and set up another power-play goal against the Islanders, and both of those assists were the primary assist. He skates with Zibanejad and Lafrenière, who have 10 points between them, and his goal against Utah came with both of them assisting. He also gets time on the second power-play unit.
The catch is role. His ice time has swung from under 11 minutes against Tampa Bay to more than 18 against Utah, averaging about 15, and two of his four points came on the second power-play unit, which gets whatever time is left after Fox's group. He had nothing in Boston, and a 2-1 Rangers win cuts his chances. At +150, though, you are being paid to take that on, and a point in four of five games is the argument that the market has him too low.
