Phillies vs. Braves Prediction, MLB Wild Card Game 1 Odds & Best Bets (9/29)

Fact checked at 7:05 AM ET, Sep 29, 2026
Odds as of Sep 29, 5:12 AM ET
The Phillies nearly let October get away. Philadelphia (88-74) lost four straight before beating Tampa Bay 7-3 on Sunday to take the National League's sixth seed, and now it opens a best-of-three Wild Card Series at third-seeded Atlanta (94-68), which hosts every game. Game 1 brings a pitching surprise: the Phillies are using Jesús Luzardo as an opener. He came off the injured list Sunday after about three weeks out with shoulder inflammation, needed four pitches for a scoreless inning against the Rays, and will go as long as he can before Andrew Painter takes over. No pitch count has been given. Atlanta has named Chris Sale, who finished with a 2.16 ERA over 162.2 innings, for Game 1. Philadelphia will be without Luis Arraez: manager Don Mattingly said Monday he can't play in the series because of a sprained left ankle, and Otto Kemp takes his roster spot.
The consensus has the Braves at -200 and the Phillies at +165, with the run line at Braves -1.5 (+115). The moneyline opened Braves -190 on Sunday evening, a modest move. The total is the bigger story: it opened at 7 and sits at 6.5 at most books, with the Over at -120 and the Under at -100, though BetMGM and Caesars still show 7. Lineups aren't posted; the projected ones have Bryce Harper batting third for Philadelphia and Ronald Acuña Jr. at the top of the order for Atlanta.
First pitch is Tuesday at 2:00 PM ET at Truist Park, on NBC and Peacock.
Phillies vs. Braves Predictions
- Pick #1: Under 6.5 (-100)
- Pick #2: Braves Moneyline (-200)
- Pick #3: Bryce Harper Over 0.5 Hits (-156)
PICK #1: Under 6.5 (-100)
The Phillies scored three runs in the four games before Sunday, and now they get Sale. The market got to the Under first.
The total opened at 7 (-110 both ways) on Sunday and is 6.5 at most books now, with the Under at -100 in the consensus as of 5:12 AM ET Tuesday. It was already 6.5 by Monday afternoon, around when the Phillies named Luzardo their opener and lost Arraez, and there's no way to time the move apart from that news, so treat them as one story. The tickets lean the same way: 76% of the money and 61% of the bets are on the Under.
Atlanta allowed 626 runs over 162 games, fifth fewest in the majors, and Sale is the headliner: a 2.16 ERA, a 0.98 WHIP, a .215 opponents' average and 200 strikeouts. Philadelphia's offense finished 19th in runs (713) and 23rd in on-base percentage (.312), was shut out 12 times, and scored seven, one, zero, one and one in its last five games. Arraez's absence takes an everyday bat out of that lineup. The Braves' bullpen is fresh, too: Monday was an off day, and the longest relief outing Saturday or Sunday was 36 pitches, with Brent Suter throwing 43 as Saturday's opener.
The risk is Philadelphia's own pitching. Luzardo (2.86 ERA in 179.2 innings) isn't built up for a long outing, and Painter, who follows him, carries a 5.40 ERA over 126.2 innings into a lineup that scored 742 runs, eighth most. The Phillies allowed 698 (11th fewest), solid but not Atlanta's tier. The weather won't help: the National Weather Service hourly forecast for Truist Park has sunny skies, the low 80s at first pitch climbing to about 84, a light east wind around 3 mph and no rain. -100 implies 50.0%, a coin-flip price on the side the market is moving toward. This pick and the Braves moneyline below lean on the same thing, Atlanta's pitching, and a 3-2 or 4-2 Atlanta win cashes both.
PICK #2: Braves Moneyline (-200)
Better pitching, better record, and the bigger bets. Atlanta is 94-68 to Philadelphia's 88-74, and its 626 runs allowed are fifth fewest in the majors. It also scores more: 742 runs, eighth most, against Philadelphia's 713, 19th. Sale's 2.16 ERA is 0.70 below Luzardo's 2.86, and Luzardo is only the opener; the innings after him belong to Painter and his 5.40 ERA.
The splits point the same direction. 60% of the moneyline money is on the Braves from 35% of the bets, while 64% of the bets are on the Phillies. The price has barely moved, from -190 on Sunday evening to -200 in the consensus as of 5:12 AM ET Tuesday, and it hasn't budged since Monday afternoon, so the bigger money that showed up after the Luzardo and Arraez news may just be bettors reacting to it. -200 implies 66.7%.
That price is the problem. -200 leaves little room, and Philadelphia comes in off a 7-3 win Sunday while Atlanta went 2-3 in its last five. The pick also rests on the projected lineup, which has Acuña at the top of the order even though he sat Sunday's regular-season finale on a scheduled rest day. If you'd rather lay the run, Braves -1.5 (+115) is the other way in.
PICK #3: Bryce Harper Over 0.5 Hits (-156)
Harper has a hit in four of his last five starts, and the one he missed was Wednesday. Since then: two hits Thursday, one Friday, one Saturday and one Sunday, the 29th homer that helped clinch the berth. Five hits in five games, batting third every game with at least four trips to the plate each time, and the projected lineup keeps him third. He finished the regular season at .269/.380/.485 with 87 RBIs, and his 107 walks led the National League. His last three starts, all with hits, came without Arraez, so the lineup change doesn't cost him anything.
Sale, though, held hitters to a .215 average, struck out 11.07 per nine innings and walked only 1.72 per nine. Harper's eye cuts both ways: a walk keeps a rally going but doesn't cash this bet. Lineups aren't posted, so the third spot is an assumption, though a safe one. -156 as of 5:20 AM ET works out to 60.9%. The bet needs only one single, so it can win in a low-scoring game alongside the Under and the Braves.
Bryson Stott (Over 0.5 Hits, -128) and Trea Turner (Over 0.5 Hits, -172) have the same record, a hit in four of their last five starts; we took Harper, and those two are the alternatives. MLB.com's projected lineup has Stott fifth, where he hit in two of his last three starts. Alec Bohm Under 1.5 Hits + Runs + RBIs (-175) and Matt Olson Under 1.5 Total Bases (-159) also stayed under in four of their last five, but each needs the same quiet afternoon the Under already needs.
