Pittsburgh's four-game road trip ends in Salt Lake City, and it has gone badly. The Penguins have lost three straight, 5-3 at Chicago, 5-2 at Colorado and 6-2 at Vegas on Saturday, with the last two coming on back-to-back nights. They're 3-5-1 overall and 1-4-1 away from home. Nine games in, they've allowed 33 goals, 3.67 a game, which ranks 26th of 32 teams. The goaltending is part of it. Arturs Silovs has an .875 save percentage, and Sergei Murashov is at .883 with an 0-3-1 record. And the offense isn't bailing anyone out: Pittsburgh hasn't scored more than three goals in a game since Oct. 3.

Utah is 6-3-0 and 2-1-0 at home, and its 3.67 goals a game rank sixth in the league. Saturday was ugly, a 6-2 home loss to Edmonton, but that came two nights after the Mammoth won 4-2 in Edmonton. Utah is a -185 favorite.

We see a comfortable Utah win, with the top line and first power-play unit doing the damage. Both picks ride on that one thing: Utah keeps scoring against a Pittsburgh team at the end of a long trip that keeps giving up goals. Puck drop is 9:00 PM ET Monday at Delta Center.

Penguins vs. Mammoth Predictions

  • Pick #1: Utah Mammoth -1.5 (+130)
  • Pick #2: Clayton Keller Over 0.5 Assists (-145)

PICK #1: Utah Mammoth -1.5 (+130)

When Utah wins, it rarely wins by one. Five of its six wins came by two goals or more: 6-0 over Chicago, 4-1 at Columbus, 5-3 at New Jersey, 4-1 at Buffalo and 4-2 at Edmonton. The 5-4 win over Toronto is the lone exception.

Pittsburgh's three losses on this trip came by two, three and four goals. A team held to three goals or fewer in seven straight games is going to struggle to keep it within one against an offense putting up close to four a night.

The puck line at +130 implies a 43.5% chance. Utah has won by two or more in five of its nine games, and this opponent just lost three in a row by multiple goals. We'll take that price.

What could go wrong is Utah's own crease. Karel Vejmelka has an .879 save percentage, and Edmonton chased him Saturday with five goals on 17 shots. Plenty of puck-line bets come down to a late empty-netter, and a one-goal Utah win loses this one.

PICK #2: Clayton Keller Over 0.5 Assists (-145)

If Utah is winning by two or more, somebody has to be setting up the goals, and nobody on the team has more assists than Keller. He has eight in nine games, with at least one in six of them, and opened the season with two-assist nights against Chicago and Columbus.

The role backs it up. Utah's most recent lines put Keller on the top line with Nick Schmaltz, who leads the team with six goals, and on the first power-play unit with Schmaltz, Logan Cooley, Dylan Guenther and Mikhail Sergachev. Seven of his 11 points have come on the power play.

Pittsburgh's defense is short on bodies. Samuel Girard crashed into the end boards in the second period Saturday in Vegas, didn't return and is day to day. Trevor van Riemsdyk and Ryan Graves are on injured reserve. That's a blue line that has given up five, five and six goals in its last three games, and Keller should get his looks. At -145, you're paying for a 59.2% chance.

He did go without an assist in both games against Edmonton last week, and nine games is a small run to lean on.
