The Nets (0-5) visit the Pacers (2-4) at Gainbridge Fieldhouse for a 5:00 PM ET tip on League Pass and local TV. Indiana won the first meeting 136-109, but it has lost three straight and is without Tyrese Haliburton, Ivica Zubac and T.J. McConnell, with Obi Toppin questionable. We expect a close game between two teams on the front end of a back-to-back, with Julius Randle and Michael Porter Jr. doing most of Brooklyn's work. That puts us on the Nets with the points, Randle on the glass and Day'Ron Sharpe under his scoring line.

Brooklyn is short too. Egor Demin and Mikel Brown Jr. are out, which leaves most of the ball-handling to Nolan Traore.

Nets vs. Pacers Predictions

  • Pick #1: Nets +3.5 (-110)
  • Pick #2: Day'Ron Sharpe Under 8.5 Points (-113)
  • Pick #3: Julius Randle 7+ Rebounds (-165)

PICK #1: Nets +3.5 (-110)

Brooklyn's two road games are why we'll back a winless team: 125-121 at Cleveland and 125-124 in overtime at Boston. Indiana is 0-2 at home, with a 16-point loss to Dallas and a 114-109 loss to Philadelphia. The Pacers who beat the Nets by 27 had Haliburton for 24 points and 10 assists. He's now week to week with a hamstring strain, and they've lost both games without him, the second 145-125 at Miami. Zubac left the first meeting after seven minutes and hasn't played since.

Indiana allows 119.8 points through six games and Brooklyn 121.2 through five, both small samples. The market has come toward the Nets. Indiana opened -4.5 and is now -3.5, with 80% of the spread money on Brooklyn from 53% of the bets, and -110 implies 52.4%.

The record argues the other way. Brooklyn has covered this number once in five games, the Cleveland loss missed by half a point, and it scored a season-low 94 in a 16-point loss to Detroit last time out. Traore has a big load, Andrew Nembhard had 14 assists against Philadelphia and 22 points at Miami, and Toppin, at 15.2 points a game, would help Indiana if he plays.

PICK #2: Day'Ron Sharpe Under 8.5 Points (-113)

Sharpe has taken five or fewer shots in four of his five starts. With Demin and Brown out, the offense runs through Randle (21.0 points) and Porter (20.8), and Brooklyn doesn't need its center to score to stay close. He's gone 8, 7, 11, 4 and 3, under this line four times, and -113 implies only 53.1%.

Five games isn't much, but last season says the same thing. He stayed under 8.5 in 38 of 62 games (61.3%), averaging 8.7 points in 18.7 minutes. A tight game also favors Moritz Wagner's shooting. Wagner has come off the bench to outscore Sharpe in each of the last three games with 13, 15 and 16 points, playing 22 and 23 minutes in the last two, while Sharpe scored 4 in 17 minutes in the overtime game at Boston.

The matchup cuts against him. His one game over the number came against Indiana, 11 points in 16 minutes, and the Pacers are thinner inside now, with Jay Huff starting at center in each of the last three games and Miami scoring 64 points in the paint. More minutes would hurt too: he stayed under in only 2 of 7 games of 25 or more minutes last season.

PICK #3: Julius Randle 7+ Rebounds (-165)

Indiana has been losing the glass, and Randle leads Brooklyn at 7.6 rebounds through five games. Opponents average 48.2 boards against the Pacers. Milwaukee had 61, and Miami had 48 with 15 offensive. After that game, lead assistant Lloyd Pierce asked, "Can we come up with some rebounds?" With Zubac out and Toppin questionable, Randle faces Huff, Pascal Siakam and the bench.

He's at 8, 6, 7, 9 and 8, reaching 7 in four of five. Short nights haven't stopped him, with 7 in 24 minutes against Indiana and 8 in 25 against Detroit, and a close game gives him more time: he had 9 in 44 minutes at Boston.

At 62.3% implied this costs plenty, and the longer record doesn't clear that alone. He reached 7 in 45 of 79 regular-season games last season (57.0%), though nearly all of those came next to Rudy Gobert in Minnesota, and he got there in 39 of 63 when he played 30 or more minutes (61.9%). His one miss this season was 6 in 35 minutes at Cleveland, and Porter takes his share of the rebounds. Randle isn't on the injury report, but a big Indiana lead would shorten his night with the Knicks next.
