Sports betting law in Michigan
Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed the Lawful Sports Betting Act and the Lawful Internet Gaming Act in December 2019. Retail sportsbooks opened at the three Detroit casinos in March 2020, and online sports betting, casino and poker all went live on January 22, 2021.
Each Detroit casino and each federally recognized tribe can run one online platform, and the Michigan Gaming Control Board authorizes them. Operators pay 8.4% of sports betting revenue in tax, and a proposed per-bet fee was left out of the July 2026 budget. Hard Rock Bet joined in December 2025 and bet365 in April 2026, bringing the count to 13 sportsbooks. In 2026 the state also went after prediction markets, winning an injunction against Kalshi and agreements that ended sports contracts from Robinhood, Coinbase and Polymarket US.

- Detroit Lions (NFL): Play at Ford Field in downtown Detroit.

Responsible gambling in Michigan
Set a budget before you bet and use the deposit, wager and time limits every licensed app offers. If betting stops being fun, the state's problem gambling helpline at 1-800-270-7117 is free, confidential and open around the clock, and 1-800-GAMBLER is there too. The Michigan Gaming Control Board runs the Disassociated Persons List for the Detroit casinos and a separate self-exclusion database for online gambling, including online sportsbooks. Michigan residents can also get a free license for Gamban, software that blocks gambling sites and apps.

Yes. Online sports betting has been legal and live since January 22, 2021, regulated by the Michigan Gaming Control Board. Thirteen online sportsbooks are authorized.
How old do you have to be to bet on sports in Michigan?
You must be 21. Pick'em and prediction apps set their own ages and check them when you sign up.
Which Michigan sportsbook should I download first?
We would start with FanDuel: it is easy to use and good for props and same game parlays. DraftKings is a close second for daily odds boosts.
Can you bet on college sports in Michigan?
Yes. Unlike many states, Michigan lets you bet on in-state schools, so the Wolverines and Spartans are on the board. High school sports are not.

Yes. Winnings are taxable income for federal and state purposes, and Michigan taxes them at its flat 4.25% income tax rate. Sportsbooks send a W-2G for larger wins, and you should report all of your winnings.
