Miami vs Texas A&M CFB Playoff First Round Best Picks

The second year of the expanded 12-team College Football Playoff follows Friday's opening clash between No. 9 Alabama and No. 8 Oklahoma with a fascinating first-round matchup to get Saturday’s three-game slate started, as No. 10 Miami travels to College Station to face No. 7 Texas A&M. Kickoff is set for noon ET on ABC, with the winner earning a date with No. 2 Ohio State in the next round.

Kyle Field will be electric, but the early start tempers the full “12th Man” effect, setting the stage for a high-variance clash between two talented, imperfect, and similarly designed teams.

Miami vs Texas A&M CFB Playoff First Round Predictions

PICK #1: Miami Money Line (+150) Click Here to Bet

Both teams are incredible on the lines of scrimmage and possess quarterbacks prone to mistakes when faced with pressure on obvious passing downs. Texas A&M has had the stronger run game, but the Hurricanes profile as the more complete team when digging into the underlying numbers.

Defensively, Miami has taken a massive leap under coordinator Corey Hetherman, ranking sixth nationally in scoring defense at just 13.8 points allowed per game and seventh against the run. That strength is critical against a Texas A&M offense that wants to establish Rueben Owens early and lean on Marcel Reed’s mobility.

Offensively, Texas A&M ranks 62nd on third down and has struggled badly in high-leverage situations. On defense, the Aggies own the nation’s worst units in the red zone, allowing scores on nearly 94% of opponent trips. That’s a dangerous combination against a Miami offense that ranks 12th in red zone efficiency and thrives on capitalizing when opponents make mistakes. Turnovers loom large as well, with A&M sitting at -7 on the season compared to Miami’s +9.

Kyle Field matters, but Miami’s quarterback advantage does too. Carson Beck has played in louder, more hostile environments during his time at Georgia and brings a level of experience Reed doesn’t have yet. The Texas A&M quarterback has thrown six interceptions in his last five games, and Miami’s opportunistic secondary, even with some injury concerns, is built to punish mistakes.

If Miami can generate pressure with its front four, led by Reuben Bain Jr., the Hurricanes will have more bodies set to cover and make Reed work through his progressions. More importantly, if they can get home with four, Miami can better cover Texas A&M’s beloved screen game, which has set up playmaking receivers Mario Craver and KC Concepcion for big YAC opportunities against lesser defenses. Miami has faced questions about its motor throughout the course of the regular season, but the NFL talent they possess means they're built for the big stage.

PICK #2: Over 51.5 Total Points (-105) Click Here to Bet

Both quarterbacks are volatile enough to swing the scoreboard quickly in either direction. Miami’s defense has been elite overall, but it has taken a noticeable step back on the road, allowing an explosive play rate of 11.5% on the road, compared to 7% at home, a success rate that drops from 66% to 58% on the road, and a drop-off from .20 EPA vs dropback to -.05 on the road.

Texas A&M’s offense is capable of hitting big plays at Kyle Field, particularly if Miami is forced to blitz to generate pressure. Conversely, the QB pressure they manufacture, led by first-round talent edge rusher Cassius Howell, can force Beck into a mistake and flip the field. Texas A&M can also shoot itself in the foot on both sides of the ball, ranking 119th in penalty yards, setting up Miami with favorable field position.

On the other side, Miami’s passing game remains efficient, ranking 10th in EPA per dropback. CFB Graphs projects this game closer to 54 points, and the matchup dynamics support that number.

PICK #3: CJ Daniels Over 35.5 Receiving Yards (-115) Click Here to Bet

With Malachi Toney commanding significant attention, WR CJ Daniels is positioned as the X-factor in Miami’s passing attack. Daniels was highly productive early in the season before injuries slowed him, but the extra preparation time for the playoffs should allow him to return closer to full speed. Against a Texas A&M defense that plays heavy-man coverage, Daniels’ ability to win on the outside becomes especially valuable.

A&M’s defensive strength lies in its pass rush, and for a Miami team that favors the pass over the run, if Beck is forced to get the ball out quickly, Daniels is a natural beneficiary. One or two chunk plays could be enough to clear this modest number, particularly if A&M sells out to limit Toney. In a game where Miami will need multiple pass-catchers to step up, Daniels’ Over is one of the most appealing props on the board.
