March Madness Second Round Predictions

Pick #1: Texas A&M Aggies -2.5 over Michigan Wolverines (-110)

Pick #2: McNeese Cowboys +5.5 over Purdue Boilermakers (-110)

Pick #3: John Tonje (WIS) Over 20.5 Points (-110)

PICK #1: Texas A&M -2.5 over Michigan (-110)

No. 5 Michigan faces No. 4 Texas A&M at 5:15 PM ET on CBS in a South Region showdown on Saturday. Michigan barely survived an upset scare from UC San Diego, while Texas A&M took care of business against Yale. The Wolverines have more size and skill, but the Aggies bring a relentless physicality that should cause problems over 40 minutes.

Michigan’s glaring issue is turnovers – they rank among the worst in the country in turnover rate, and UC San Diego exposed that weakness in the first round. Texas A&M, with its athleticism and aggressive defense, can do the same while capitalizing on transition opportunities. The Aggies also dominate the offensive glass, ranking No. 1 nationally in offensive rebounding. That spells trouble for a Michigan team that struggles with defensive rebounding.

Adding in Michigan’s fatigue factor – coming off a grueling Big Ten Tournament run, then playing in Denver’s altitude after a tough Round 1 game – Texas A&M’s depth and physicality should wear down the Wolverines late. The Aggies are more than capable of winning and covering here.

PICK #2: McNeese +5.5 over Purdue (-110)

No. 12 McNeese is one of the tournament’s biggest surprises after upsetting No. 5 Clemson in the first round. Now, they take on No. 4 Purdue in the Midwest Region at 12:10 PM ET on CBS.

McNeese made its mark with aggressive defense and rebounding, holding Clemson to just 13 first-half points and dominating the offensive glass with 18 boards. That’s a major concern for Purdue, which ranks 170th in defensive rebounding and has struggled with interior defense all season, ranking 348th nationally in two-point percentage defense. The Cowboys’ ability to attack the rim and force tough perimeter shots could keep this game closer than expected.

Christian Shumate was a force in the first round, notching a double-double with five offensive rebounds. He should be poised for another big outing against a Purdue team that lacks elite rim protection. Meanwhile, Purdue’s backcourt was unimpressive against High Point, with key guard Fletcher Loyer nearly invisible. If McNeese can control the glass and force Purdue into long possessions with their pressure defense, they can absolutely cover the 5.5-point spread.

PICK #3: John Tonje (WIS) Over 20.5 Points (-110)

No. 3 Wisconsin faces No. 6 BYU in what is likely to be a high-paced, three-point heavy battle in the East Region. Both teams rank in the top 20 nationally in three-point attempts, making this a high-variance game. However, one thing remains constant – John Tonje’s ability to score.

Tonje, a Second-Team All-American, has a strong case to go off in this matchup. He spent three years at Colorado State, meaning he’s used to playing in altitude. BYU, while an elite shooting team, struggles mightily with perimeter defense, ranking 250th in three-point defense and allowing the 29th most threes in the country. That’s bad news against a player like Tonje, who shoots 39% from deep and averages 19.1 PPG.

Tonje had a quieter first-round game, but that was largely because Wisconsin didn’t need him to take over. That is unlikely to be the case here – Wisconsin needs its star and he should deliver. Whether he’s shooting from deep, attacking closeouts, or drawing fouls (91% from the free-throw line on 6.6 attempts per game), Tonje has multiple avenues to hit the Over on his 20.5 points prop.
