The league's best offense meets its best defense at 6:00 PM ET in Detroit. The Lakers (8-2) score 122.0 points a game, more than anyone. The Pistons (6-2) allow 101.8, fewer than anyone. The schedule helps Detroit: the Pistons have had three days off, and the Lakers played at home two nights ago before opening a four-game road trip here. We think Detroit's defense decides it, with the Pistons winning by more than a couple of baskets in a game that stays under the total.

Luka Doncic scored 53 against Portland two nights ago, and he's listed as questionable with low back tightness on the latest injury report. Detroit is without Jalen Duren (right hamstring strain) and Isaiah Joe (right hip contusion). Both are out, and neither has played in any of the Pistons' last five games.

Lakers vs. Pistons Predictions

  • Pick #1: Pistons -4.5 (-110)
  • Pick #2: Under 221.5 (-107)

PICK #1: Pistons -4.5 (-110)

Detroit hasn't won a close game this season. Its six wins came by 8, 17, 13, 8, 16 and 33 points, and its two losses by 14 and six. So tonight mostly asks whether the Pistons win, and at -110 the spread implies 52.4%.

On paper these teams are close. Detroit outscores opponents by 9.3 points a game and the Lakers by 7.7. The difference is home court and rest, and Detroit has both. The Pistons have had three days to recover. The Lakers get one day off and a flight across the country.

The bigger bets are on Detroit. On the spread, 78% of the money is on the Pistons from 57% of the bets. On the moneyline, Detroit has 59% of the money on just 37% of the bets.

Everything turns on Doncic. If he sits, the Lakers lose a player averaging 40.1 points a game. If he plays, he's averaged 45.0 over his last four games, and the Lakers have won four straight and are 3-1 on the road. Detroit's offense is nothing special at 111.1 points a game, and without Duren the Pistons have been outrebounded in each of their last five games. If the Lakers win the glass, the cover gets hard.

PICK #2: Under 221.5 (-107)

Detroit's last six games have all stayed under 221.5, finishing between 186 and 218 total points, and six of its eight overall have stayed under. Four of those last six opponents scored 94 or fewer. At -107, the Under implies 51.7%.

The Lakers' totals look different on the road. All six of their home games went over this number. Three of their four road games stayed under: 207 at Golden State, 219 at Sacramento and 190 at the Clippers, the one game Doncic missed. A 255-point game at Utah is the exception. Four road games isn't much to go on, but the pattern makes sense for a team on short rest playing the league's stingiest defense.

Bettors are split right down the middle on this one, with 53% of both the bets and the money on the Over. If Doncic is ruled out, the Lakers lose a 40-point scorer and the scoring should drop further.

The risk is the Lakers' recent scoring. They've averaged 127.3 points over their last four games, and seven of their 10 games have gone over 221.5. If Doncic plays and scores the way he has lately, Detroit's defense has to hold this under by itself.
