Odds as of Oct 13, 5:36 AM ET

Philadelphia is 0-5-2, the worst start in franchise history, and has been outscored 28-8. In seven games the Flyers have never scored more than two goals. They average 1.14 goals a game, last in the league, and they take 20 shots a night while giving up 35.1, the worst shot differential in the NHL. Their 4.00 goals allowed per game ranks 28th of 32.

Seattle comes in at 4-2-0, on the third stop of an eastern trip after wins at Detroit (6-3) and Washington (5-3). The Kraken score 4.33 goals a game, third in the league, and allow 2.83. Both teams played Sunday and had Monday off.

Philadelphia is still the home favorite at -122, with Seattle at +102. That price has come in from +110 on Sunday, and the consensus total has climbed from 5.5 to 6. We'd side with the records anyway. Seattle's forwards should get several pucks past a team that gives up 35 shots a night, and Philadelphia hasn't shown it can score enough to keep up. All three picks are built on that game.

Puck drop is Tuesday, Oct. 13, at 7:00 PM ET at Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia, on Prime Video and NBC Sports Philadelphia.

Kraken vs. Flyers Predictions

  • Pick #1: Jared McCann Over 0.5 Points (-130)
  • Pick #2: Chandler Stephenson Over 0.5 Points (+100)
  • Pick #3: Seattle Kraken Moneyline (+102)

PICK #1: Jared McCann Over 0.5 Points (-130)

McCann has been held without a point once in six games, in the 3-1 loss at Edmonton on Oct. 3. Otherwise he has seven points (two goals, five assists), and he's projected on the top line with Matty Beniers and Mackie Samoskevich. The club's own numbers have that line second on the team at 3.59 expected goals per 60 minutes.

He shoots a lot, too: 17 shots in six games, seven of them against Vegas on Oct. 6. Only two of his five point games included a power-play point, so he has been producing at even strength. His ice time has run from 12:01 to 17:54.

A -130 price works out to 56.5%. For a top-line winger with points in five of six games, facing a defense that allows four goals and 35 shots a game, that's fair. Six games is a short run, and Seattle's 16.6% shooting, second in the league, will come down eventually. An assist pays this bet just as well as a goal, though.

PICK #2: Chandler Stephenson Over 0.5 Points (+100)

At even money you need Stephenson to get on the board half the time. He has done it in five of six: 1, 1, 0, 2, 1, 1, newest first, for six points with five assists. He centers the second line between Bobby McMann and Jordan Eberle and plays 15:46 to 18:16 a night.

He isn't the shooter here. Stephenson has four shots all season, and the club's numbers put his line last of Seattle's four in expected goals per 60. He's a setup man who needs his wingers to finish. Philadelphia should give them chances: 35.1 shots against per game, and 26 times shorthanded, third most in the league. Two of his point games included a power-play point.

McCann and Stephenson are on different lines, but both bets need the same thing from Seattle. If the Kraken are held to one goal, both probably lose.

PICK #3: Seattle Kraken Moneyline (+102)

The Flyers' game-by-game goal totals read 0, 2, 2, 1, 1, 1 and 1. They shoot 5.7% as a team and their power play converts 9.5%. Seattle has outscored its opponents 26-17, is 3-1 on the road, and has scored five or more in four of six games. If Seattle's forwards do what the first two picks ask, Philadelphia has to win a high-scoring game, and it hasn't scored more than two all season.

The +102 price implies 49.5%, about a coin flip, with Philadelphia a slight home favorite.

This is still the thinnest of the three. Seattle's shot differential is minus 31, 28th in the league, so its scoring has leaned on finishing. Philadelphia's 5.7% won't last either, and its seven games have come against Pittsburgh, New Jersey, Tampa Bay, Ottawa, Boston and Carolina twice. Neither goalie is confirmed. Projections for Philadelphia split between Joseph Woll (.914 in four starts, including Sunday) and Dan Vladar (.857 in three). Seattle's club preview lists Philipp Grubauer (.917), with Joey Daccord (.913) having started Sunday.
