Utah visits Dallas at 8:00 PM ET in an NBA Cup group game that also counts in the standings. The Jazz are 1-7, have lost six straight and are still without Jaren Jackson Jr. (torn MCL) and starting center Jusuf Nurkic (foot), so Lauri Markkanen, Jaxson Hayes and Mo Bamba are what's left up front. They score 107.8 points a game, give up 119.0, and made 11 of 47 threes in their last game, a 120-113 overtime loss in New Orleans. Dallas (4-4) shot 38% in its own last game, a 112-111 loss at San Antonio. Look for more of the same: a long, ragged game with plenty of misses and not much size on the floor, with Dallas, a 7.5-point favorite, in control. That sends rebounds to the forwards on both sides and gives Cooper Flagg a soft defense to pass against.

Jazz vs. Mavericks Predictions

  • Pick #1: Ace Bailey Over 5.5 Rebounds (-110)
  • Pick #2: Cooper Flagg Over 5.5 Assists (-137)
  • Pick #3: P.J. Washington Over 6.5 Rebounds (-146)

PICK #1: Ace Bailey Over 5.5 Rebounds (-110)

With Jackson and Nurkic out, Bailey plays big minutes and rebounds like a forward. In his last five games, starting with the night Jackson got hurt, he has grabbed 10, 6, 7, 6 and 5 while playing 24 to 40 minutes. For the season he has cleared 5.5 in six of eight games and averages 7.3.

Nobody on Utah owns the glass anymore, and Dallas missed plenty at San Antonio. At -110, the Over implies 52.4%. Both of Bailey's misses this season were five-rebound nights, the latest in New Orleans, so even his bad games land close to the line. The real danger is a cut in minutes.

PICK #2: Cooper Flagg Over 5.5 Assists (-137)

Flagg has started all five games since coming back from a left shoulder sprain, and his passing has held up with or without Kyrie Irving. In those games he had 11 assists at Miami, 8 against Oklahoma City, 6 against Houston, 6 against Sacramento and 5 at San Antonio, playing 33 to 40 minutes. Irving sat the Sacramento game, and Flagg still had six. He averages 6.3 assists and has gone over 5.5 in five of seven games.

Utah has allowed 113 or more in six of its eight games, so the shots Flagg sets up should fall. The -137 price implies 57.8%, and the trend gives us pause: 6, then 5 with Irving back handling the ball. A blowout that sends the starters to the bench early would also cost him minutes.

PICK #3: P.J. Washington Over 6.5 Rebounds (-146)

With Dereck Lively II out, Washington plays heavy frontcourt minutes. He has 9, 9, 10, 5 and 10 rebounds in his last five games, all starts, and he's over 6.5 in six of eight games this season with an 8.0 average. At San Antonio he played 39 minutes while Daniel Gafford played only 18.

This is the steepest price of the three, implying 59.3%, and his season record backs it up. Utah's thin frontcourt and all those long misses should leave plenty of boards for him. Santi Aldama is listed as probable and could make his Dallas debut, which would take some of those frontcourt minutes. Washington also had only 5 rebounds in 38 minutes against Sacramento, so a quiet night is possible.
