No. 23 Kentucky hosts James Madison at 7:00 PM ET at Rupp Arena. Kentucky wins this comfortably on defense, just not by four touchdowns. The Wildcats' length should hold a rebuilt, three-heavy Dukes team in the 60s, Kentucky's own offense has been slow out of the gate, and that points to a win by about 20 with the final score somewhere in the low-to-mid 150s. We're taking the Under and James Madison with the points.

Each team has played once. Kentucky beat Manhattan 85-57 in its opener, and James Madison lost 86-77 at home to Miami (Ohio). The Dukes have 13 newcomers on a 15-man roster, and one player they lost, All-Sun Belt third-team forward Justin McBride, transferred to Kentucky. Coach Preston Spradlin is a Kentucky native who worked on the Wildcats' staff from 2009 to 2014, and this is the first meeting between the programs.

James Madison vs. Kentucky Predictions

  • Pick #1: Under 157.5 (-114)
  • Pick #2: James Madison +25.5 (-111)

PICK #1: Under 157.5 (-114)

Start with what Kentucky did to Manhattan: 19 of 54 shooting (35.2%), 7 of 26 from three, and seven steals from Alex Wilkins in his Kentucky debut. The Wildcats gave up 57 points, and the game finished at 142.

James Madison lives on the three. The Dukes took 34 of their 70 shots from deep against Miami (Ohio), made 14, and shot 38.6% overall. They also turned it over 12 times, 10 of them after halftime. A team that needs threes to score, playing into Kentucky's length, should come up empty on a lot of trips.

The two most widely used efficiency ratings both come in under this total, one at 88-68 (156 points) and the other at 86-66 (152). At -114 you're paying for a 53.3% chance. Shooting is what beats it. James Madison's opener reached 163 with the Dukes hitting 41% from three, and Kentucky made 12 threes against Manhattan. With one game each to judge, a hot night from either side is enough.

PICK #2: James Madison +25.5 (-111)

Kentucky should control this game, but 26 points is a lot to ask of a team that is still sorting itself out. Both efficiency ratings make Kentucky about a 20-point favorite. James Madison rates around 150th nationally, while Manhattan was rated 316th entering the season, and Kentucky beat Manhattan by 28.

The opener also showed what happens to Kentucky's big leads. The Wildcats were up 39 with five minutes left before Manhattan closed on a 13-2 run after Mark Pope cleared the bench. Kentucky also started 4 of 12 from the floor in the first eight minutes and committed 14 turnovers, and Pope called the careless possessions unacceptable. Kansas is next on the schedule, so he has little reason to ride his starters once this one is decided.

The price, -111, implies a 52.6% chance, and 83% of the spread money is on James Madison, from 70% of the bets. This loses if Kentucky's pressure breaks the Dukes the way Miami (Ohio) did after halftime.
