Jacksonville (5-2) visits Baltimore (4-4) for Thursday Night Football at M&T Bank Stadium, with kickoff at 8:15 PM ET on Prime Video. The Ravens are down to their third quarterback. Lamar Jackson hurt his right thumb on his first pass in the 36-10 loss at Buffalo, and coach Jesse Minter said he needs surgery and will go on injured reserve. Tyler Huntley left the same game with a toe injury that is reportedly season-ending. Minter has named undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano the starter, and Fagnano has been practicing with his right ankle heavily taped. Baltimore is working on a trade for Jacoby Brissett, but he won't be ready for this one.

The line tells you how the market sees it. Baltimore was favored on the early line with a total in the high 40s. Now Jacksonville is a 10-point road favorite at -549, and the total is 39.5. We see a Jaguars win that never gets loud. The league's second-best scoring defense smothers a rookie making his first start, and Jacksonville protects its lead with the running game and the tight ends instead of the wide receivers. That's the game behind all three picks.

Jaguars vs. Ravens Predictions

  • Pick #1: Under 39.5 (-109)
  • Pick #2: Jakobi Meyers Under 3.5 Receptions (-157)
  • Pick #3: Nate Boerkircher Over 7.5 Receiving Yards (-115)

PICK #1: Under 39.5 (-109)

Baltimore hasn't scored more than 13 points in any of its last three games, and Huntley or Jackson started all of them. Fagnano's only NFL action came in relief at Buffalo: 10-of-21 for 91 yards, an interception and a lost fumble. His backups, Kedon Slovis and Austin Reed, joined the team this week. Now he gets a Jacksonville defense that allows 15.9 points a game, second-fewest in the league.

The Jaguars don't have to push the pace to win. In the 42-7 rout of Indianapolis they ran for a season-best 183 yards, and Trevor Lawrence threw only 14 passes before he sat early in the fourth quarter. With a lead, expect the same plan: hand it off, shorten the game and make Fagnano throw his way out of a hole.

The Under at -109 implies 52.2%. Jacksonville's offense is the problem. It scores 28 points a game, fifth in the league, and Baltimore's defense allows 25.4. Only 3 of the Jaguars' 7 games have stayed under 39.5, and if they put up 35 on their own, this one is in trouble. About 65% of the bets are on the Under, so you'll have company. The forecast is mild with light wind and a chance of a passing shower, so weather isn't part of the case.

PICK #2: Jakobi Meyers Under 3.5 Receptions (-157)

Meyers has caught 2, 1, 7, 3, 2, 5 and 2 passes this season, under 3.5 in 5 of 7 games. He's getting 4.4 targets a game, which puts him behind Parker Washington among the receivers, and Brenton Strange takes a big share of the short throws from the tight end spot.

Last season is why the price isn't steeper. After his trade to Jacksonville, he caught at least four passes in eight of nine regular-season games on almost seven targets a game. That was a different job. Washington is the top receiver now, and Meyers is seeing more than two fewer targets a game. He has also been limited in practice all week with hamstring and ankle problems. He isn't on the final injury report, but he played just 54% of the snaps against the Colts.

At -157 the break-even is 61.1%. A run-first game with a lead keeps his catches down. The ways this loses are a repeat of the Patriots game, when he caught seven of eight targets in a 35-6 blowout, or a tight game that has Lawrence throwing 40 times, as he did in the 34-31 loss to Houston, when Meyers caught five.

PICK #3: Nate Boerkircher Over 7.5 Receiving Yards (-115)

This bet comes down to one catch. The rookie tight end has 7 receptions on 9 targets for 83 yards, and every game in which he's caught a pass has cleared 7.5: 9, 15, 20, 8 and 31 yards. He missed only against Denver, when he wasn't targeted, and New England, when his one target fell incomplete.

He's the No. 2 tight end behind Strange and has played between a third and two-thirds of the offensive snaps every week, so he's on the field even when Jacksonville sits on a lead and runs. His 31-yard touchdown against the Colts came on a busted coverage, and Baltimore will be without safety Jaylinn Hawkins again.

At -115 he has to get there 53.5% of the time. Books price him to catch at least one pass about two times in three, and his catches have averaged 11.9 yards, so the yardage line looks a little low. The weakness is plain enough: he sees one or two targets a game, and one missed connection sinks it.
